PokeBeach’s August TCG Cup is over and the winners have been crowned!

The tournament was played in the Standard format at the time — XY through Steam Siege.

Interview with the Champion

Here’s our interview with him:

How well are you performing in Play! Pokemon tournaments this season?

It just started… and I haven’t touched a deck of real cards since Nationals lol. School’s tough.

Why did you decide to participate in this tournament?

I love these tournaments and I play in them because I can’t usually make it to in-real-life tournaments on a regular basis. To know I can look forward to a round every few days keeps me competitive. The fact that it’s free is also super nice.

What deck did you play for the August TCG Cup?

I played the deck I used at Nationals this year — [card name=”M Manectric-EX” set=”Phantom Forces” no=”24″ c=”name”][/card] / [card name=”Jolteon-EX” set=”Generations” no=”28″ c=”name”][/card]. I love Mega Man so much and because September includes Steam Siege and a new Standard, I thought this was my last chance to give my main man a go before retiring the deck. I am now sad.

What kind of decks did you play against?

I played against Water Toolbox, [card name=”Trevenant BREAK” set=”BREAKpoint” no=”66″ c=”name”][/card], Night March. I can’t remember [the rest] to be honest.

What was your favorite card in your list?

Jolteon may have been swag, but I just love M Manectric-EX as a card. Energy acceleration, free Retreat, [card name=”Rough Seas” set=”Primal Clash” no=”137″ c=”name”][/card] support… I’m gonna miss a lot.

What was your most exciting game or match?

I think my last round was pretty intense, for the perfect 6-0. I was up against Night March and I got really scared that I could lose my winning streak right there. Thankfully, Jolteon is a boss and I whipped out Flash Ray on the second turn in both matches to seal it. Lotta pressure there.

Would you make any changes to your deck or list?

I’ve tinkered with the deck for so long, and there’s always the weird feeling with what I wanna do with [card name=”Max Potion” set=”BREAKpoint” no=”103″ c=”name”][/card], a potential [card name=”Startling Megaphone” set=”Flashfire” no=”97″ c=”name”][/card], and [card name=”Parallel City” set=”BREAKthrough” no=”145″ c=”name”][/card]. Parallel City is nuts in this deck to get rid of spent [card name=”Hoopa-EX” set=”Ancient Origins” no=”36″ c=”name”][/card] and [card name=”Shaymin-EX” set=”Roaring Skies” no=”77″ c=”name”][/card], but I never really pulled the trigger on it and opted for more Rough Seas.

What kind of decks give yours trouble? Which are good matchups?

I love Mega Man because it has good matchups across the board, save Night March if it has an explosive setup. Water Toolbox is tricky, [card name=”Trevenant” set=”XY” no=”55″ c=”name”][/card] can hamper the deck if you whiff Rough Seas, but you do have outs to significantly improve your odds of winning.

How does Evolutions and affect your deck? Is it still viable?

I mean… rotation. So. This deck doesn’t exist anymore. ):
