Apparently, yes, the concept of just giving nicknames to your Pokemon is hard for them.

It just shows how quickly people will make a heel-face turn and completely forget their hate... Not to sound like a jerk, but Smugleaf is overused. Seriously. It was funny/cool for a little bit, but when everyone started spamming it like mudkipz, it became annoying.

A little off topic, but what about the names of the gym leaders? Sure, they may not matter as much as the names of Pokemon, but none-the-less they are part of the game. If Shaga gets a lame name, I will, to say the least, be disappointed. Just look at him.
