How to Properly Conduct a Trade

Due to numerous misunderstandings about a trade being finalized or not, we have made this example thread. Be very careful when sending your address first. Leave nothing to chance. Some things to ask about are Card Condition, Language, Set, Card Numbers, Reverse holo or not, World Championship reprint or not. Remember that when you exchange addresses it is like signing a contract, you are then held to the trade organized. (If it is a sale, then when the buyer says they commit to buying the deal is finalized. The seller then gives his/her PayPal address or address.)

Below is an example trade organized in private messages. It is a good idea to keep everything organized in one string of replies for future reference or if any problems arise.

As previously discussed on my trade thread:

I can trade my:

Luxray GL Lv. X
DCE
Energy Gain

Your:
Gengar Prime
Mew Prime
Donphan Prime

Sound great, I can do that trade.
Can we finalize by exchanging address?
Before we exchange addresses, I have a couple questions first.

Are your cards mint or near-mint? Anything wrong I should know beforehand?
Are any Reprints, Promos, or World Championship Cards?
Are they in English?

Mew prime has light edge wear. I had it in a deck briefly, nothing very noticeable unless you look at it very closely.
None are reprints, promos, or world championship card.
Yes, they are in English.

Oh, is your Double Colorless Energy from Heartgold/Soul Silver or Base Set?

Double Colorless Energy are the Base Set 2 version.

OK, so, just to be clear, our trade would look like this:

My:

RR Luxray GL Lv. X - mint (not WC reprint)
Base Set 2 Double Colorless Energy - mint
PT Energy Gain - mint

Your:

TR Gengar Prime - mint
TR Mew Prime - light edge wear
HGSS Donphan Prime - mint

According to the reference rules, the lowest sends first. You seem to have a few more than I do, so I can send first.

Ahh, OK. The Base Set 2 version of it, is worth less to me.

Would you mind if I add a Power spray to even it up?

Sure, I can do that. So our trade would look like this:

My:

RR Luxray GL Lv. X 109/111 - mint - not WC reprint - english
BS2 DCE 124/130 - mint - english
PT Energy Gain 116/127 - mint - english
PT Power Spray 117/127 - mint - english

Your:

TR Gengar Prime 94/102 - mint -english
TR Mew Prime - 97/102 - light edge wear - english
HGSS Donphan Prime 107/123 - mint - english

Does this looks good to you? If so we can exchange address and finalize!

Looks great. My address is:

Pokemon Fan
25 Pikachu Street
Anytown, Anystate 12345

Please let me know yours. Also please PM me once you have sent out.

I will be sending out Monday morning. But I will PM you once I do.

Here is my address:

Card Player
26 Raichu Avenue
Anycity, Anystate, 12345

Thanks for trading! I will PM you once I receive and again when I send out.

OK great, our addresses have been exchanged, and I am holding the cards agreed upon for you.
This finalizes our trade.
I will let you know when I get yours.

Thanks for reading! We hope all of your trades go smoothly. If you have any suggestions or comments, please leave a post below.

That looks like it covers all the most important bases, I always make sure that the cards are English, non-wc, and Mint/NM which are all essential.

I think it looks great! It shows a good way to work out a deal in a short and easy process.:)

One problem I have had in the past when trying to work out a trade with someone is that I tell them a few things and ask a few questions, but they only respond to one of the many things I said. I'd say a solution to that problem is for people to make sure they read the entire post, and to answer all the questions to the best of their ability in a way that is easy to understand.

I don't know if that means anything to you, but I just wanted to mention a small problem that I have had when trying to work out a deal.;)

I'm glad this was posted. I got some really messed up cards in the mail saturday. They literally looked like the guy had stomped on them and left them on the floor for a week.

I think another thing people should watch out for is previous trade issues and negative/neutral reps. I've been involved in trades where I was wondering why the person wasn't responding only to find out they got accused of ripping and were banned. People always need to be wary of who they are trading with even if the person seems friendly.

I'm not saying everyone out there is going to stab you in the back, but it's always good to keep a watchful eye.

^
agreed, i had a couple of smaller trades that went bad(last year) and that was b/c they simply just left the site, they sent first so i didn't lose anything but just annoying :p

Just want to point out that the PM where he asks if he can add a Power Spray is mixed up. One trader wouldn't add something to a trade because the other guy has a worthless DCE, would he? Well, maybe he would...

But it should probably say "you."
