Metal Gear Solid Series

Metal Gear Solid is a pretty loved franchise by the majority of people I have met and it's probably my personal favourite. Starting out on home computers it has since evolved into one of the most recognizable game series popular for its intricate and bizarre story, well crafted game design, iconic art and addicting gameplay.

It's taken a lot of interesting development turns as of late with PeaceWalker and the most recent being Ground Zeroes which was released very recently.

What is your take on the new game, given that it is by far the shortest in the series but certainly the most different? For one I think I understand where Kojima is coming from. The want to keep MGS's popularity high by the time the Phantom Pain comes out is fair but releasing nothing short of a tech demo, for money no less, as the latest installment is not the way to go around this.
To release the set of trailers in a years time may have been the better move while giving Platinum games the clear for Rising 2 would have been a much better move in my opinion. Please keep spoilers for Ground Zeroes in spoiler tags for the benefit of those who haven't played (including me!).

RE: Metal Gear Solid

Since Ground Zeroes is just a type of prologue for The Phantom Pain, I can see why it's much shorter than the other games in the series. I still haven't managed to get my hands on GZ or Peace Walker yet, but I'll hopefully have them finished by the time TPP is out.

*shakes fist*

A prologue is all fine and dandy with me but a two hour game, three at a stretch, even with replay value kills any chance of me buying it for anything less than a quarter of its price.

RE: Metal Gear Solid

my friend and I split the $30 to buy Ground Zeroes so we wouldn't feel bad about spending too much on it lel

Ground Zeroes is just great. The extremely short time it takes to complete the main part of the game (2 hours for us while taking our time) really hurts for someone who was expecting something more. The mechanics and overhauls the series make it fantastic, but the short completion time and abrupt ending to the game is making me crave Phantom Pain even more now. Damn you Kojima! :x

the second bomb in paz was a terrible way to end the prologue so abruptly afkhahflfajy35y3

RE: Metal Gear Solid

Finally a thread about MGS. I just hope it gets noticed.
I'm going to wait for a potencial "Complete Edition". I also like Castlevania, another one of Konami's series and after seeing what they've done with it (a.k.a. ruined it with LoS), seeing that the company now only lives on a couple of franchises, that it only allowed for Kojima to develop the Fox Engine because he said it was for MGS (when he wanted from the beginning to use it for other games, at least from (short-sighted) Konami), it seems Kojima is lying when saying that he wanted for fans to have a taste of MGS' new gameplay and visuals. Sweet Boss, have you seen the prices for it? I know it has lots of replayability when it comes to approaches but it only in a base, with a handfull of side missions (and from what I've been reading, not that great) and with a cheesy nostalgia thing with Dejá Vú (and yeah, they had to go choose the Rising skin for Raiden on Jamais Vú -_-). Also, the DLC for TPP is just "meh". Worst of all, the cover is simply awful and a waste of Shinkawa's work. I've seen the cover artwork he made for the game and it's just magnificent. I just want to swear Konami for such a ... BAH!!!!

PS: being a sequel to PW doesn't help either. PW had by far the worst cast of the entire series - the only thing that deserved to live was Nuke, the cat.

RE: Metal Gear Solid

I caved in and rented Ground Zeroes. It's freaking amazing. Not worth $30, but still amazing.

I agree, an MGS cover deserves nothing less than Shinkawa's treatment. I'd rather not have Big Boss' face looking at me like I chose one of the Monster Hunter missions.

I'd say Rising had a worse cast. It was really Raiden, Sam and Armstrong that carried it with incredible writing to boot.

By the real end of PeaceWalker Paz and Zadornov started to interest me more as characters. And after reading the wiki Huey and Strangelove grew on me too.

Totally! Also, from what I've read on "The Snake Soup" the lens flare should overlap Big Boss. Have you seen Shinkawa's artwork for the cover? Simple yet amazing.

Shinkawa's artwork for TPP's B.Boss is also gorgeous. While reading through "Metal Gear Informer", a user posted a link to a thread (neogaf?) about creating our own covers. Oh boy, if I have the time and chance I'll use it!

Crap, I always forget how Paz gets better as a character after listening to her tapes. I think that if the producers hadn't made her false "peace speech" less obvious to players, it would have been great. Zadornov...no, he also gets somewhat interesting by the end but that "rocket peace" finale was just too much (another one whose personality and afiliation was plain obvious and suspicious)!
What did you read that made you change opinions about Huey and Strangelove? I can't like them because Huey has Otacon's voice and it looks almost like him (I could accept the physical similarities but the same voice actor?) and like his son, he just seems like a copycat and a thief. Strangelove, along with the game itself, ruined the Boss with the lame AI that only complicates matter and confuses (the Boss would never fire her nukes at her own country just to have a world without borders since she's loyal to the end, to her country, despite being betrayed by politicians. What I read from her actions is that she intended for a world without borders but on behalf or promoted by the US) (B.B sure know to do daydream and be a dummy) and that lesbian stuff (I wouldn't have a problem if she sticked to the Boss but one of Paz's tapes when she was sick just portrays Strangelove as a female predator).

Yeah, Rising is indeed worst but I don't even take that game in consideration, even if it weren't non-canon. I hate Armstrong, Sam is ok but ends up short (as the whole game) and Raiden is just ruined because MGS4 was the game to give the series and characters a finale, his new exoskeleton (I remember reading that in this game there is some new definitions of suits and exoskeletons so I'm sorry if I mix the two) looks inferior and like some prototype armour to the one he had in MGS4 and I really can't support Quinton as Raiden anymore, at least not after playing MGS2 (I only had the chance with the HD Collection).

PS: while I was a little sad that GZ and TPP won't have real weapons I like even more that now they won't have to pay companies to feature the weapons.
