Were your first catches random, or did you have them planned?

Red: Nidoran male. Even when the games first came out I didn't even cast a passing glance at Rattata and Pidgey. I wanted Nidoking on my team from the start, and still catch him immediately in every replay.

Gold: It may have been Hoothoot because I thought he was cute, but more likely it was Gastly since I needed him for flash.

Ruby: Ralts, I planned on having Gardevoir on my team from the start. Fortunately it wasn't too hard to get the modest/female Ralts I wanted.

Red: Probably just Rattata or Pidgey. No real reason.

Gold: Spearow. I might have caught Pidgey or something on Route 29 first before this, but I don't remember, probably because Spearow was so vivid. I was having trouble with pretty much the entire game. Accidentaly caught a Spearow, leveled it up in Sprout Tower and had an almost unstoppable force.

Sapphire: Again, something generic like Poocheyana or Zigzagoon. Though I vividly remember getting Wurmple a little while later. Levelled it up in a double battle on Route 115 and had a Silicoon. It became the only double battle partner I used under normal circumstances.

LeafGreen (soret, not an experienced Pokemon gamer): Pidgey, because I always wanted one in my team. As generic as it was, I loved it anyways. Named him "Smidge". :p

HeartGold (D:,): Hoothoot. Once again, the generic bird of the region. I loved Hoothoot SO much, until I realized how horrible Noctowl's stats were. I'm never having Hoothoot in my team ever again. ._.

Sapphire: Zigzagoon. This was my first Pokemon game, and like the noob I was, I caught the regional rodent. He was useful with all the HMs he could learn. >:3

Well, racoons aren't rodents. I guess that explains why I don't mind Zigzagoon and Linoon. Later in the game, I caught a Linoon to use for HMs. Sentret and Furret aren't rodent based either actually, they are in the same family as weasels and such.

As such, those Zigzagoon and Sentret are the only 2 "beginning of game normal type small mammals" I don't mind since they aren't filthy rodents. I never bothered with them anyways though since I hate normal types lolz.

Red: Pidgey or Rattata - No reason

Soul Silver: Rattata - No reason

Sapphire: I don't remember,probably a Wurple - No reason

as you can see I caught those pokemon for no reason and thats because I usually always catch the first weak Pokemon I see.

Zomg, I didn't know dat. o:
And what's wrong with Normal-types? They only have 1 weakness, and they can learn hella moves. :p

Well I've just always been big on "super effective" moves, it's more satisfying to me lol. So I hate normal attacks, and I hate battling normal types without fighting attacks.

Ruby: POOCHEYENA!!! mainly because it was cool looking...
Sapphire: Shiny Wurmple. What are the chances?
Diamond: Shinx. It's awesome.
Platinum: Bidoof, to use as a HM slave later (Mt. Coronet)
Heartgold: Hoothoot. To put stuff to sleep.

Platinum: Kricketot. Not quite generic.
Planned: I thought I'll use a kricketune for for grass pokemon.
Then I realized he learnt three moves or something.

Red: Pidgey, cause Pidgeot destroys!

Gold: Zubat, in the Dark Cave.

Ruby: Poochyena, cause Mightyena destroys!

Red:Rattata because I like raticate
Gold:Sentret because I wanted Furret
Ruby:Taillow no reason

Blue: Rattata..... for no reason
Crystal: Pidgey.... since I knew I was gonna need something that learns fly
Emerald: Tailow.... same reason as pidgey
Pearl: BIDOOF!!!

Zigzagoon in Ruby, Poochyanna in Sapphire, Rattatta in Firered, and Smeargle in Emerald.

Red: Pidgey, the only reason I caught it was because back then I used to think it was rare as all get out.I know very muchly better.

Gold: Sentret, I thought it was so cute.

Ruby: Poochyena ^this

I am a little more complex, looking into harder pokemon to get in the game.
Firered: Pikachu (Yes, I went Ash style for my first caught pokemon, except he got his as a starter...)
Ruby: Ralts. I adored Gardevoir at the time.
Emerald: Once again, I went on the rare path, but instead I went with Slakoth of all things...

Red: Rattata. Everyone was a n00b during the first gen.

Leaf Green: Mankey, to take care of the first gym, since I chose 'mander as a starter.

Gold: Pidgey. Because I used Pidgeot so much in red, I had to have another in Gold.

Soul Silver: Ghastly. Togekiss was my new favorite flier, and it's not too hard to come by in the second generation, so rather than Pidgey I caught Bellsprout, although I wish I had skipped on the Bellsprout for a Mareep now that I remembered how useless Weepinbell was in Gold.

Sapphire: Probably something like a wurmple or zigzagoon. My most recent play through, I caught a Ralts first.
