Breaking Through — Revisiting Golisopod-GX for London with Some New Tricks
Hello PokeBeach readers, I am back with a new take on [card name=”Golisopod-GX” set=”Burning Shadows” no=”17″ c=”name”][/card], the deck that is my current top pick for London Internationals. I have been putting in some solid testing since my last major tournament, Daytona Beach Regionals, and I think this deck handles most of the metagame that I expect to see. Let’s jump right into the list.
Golisopod-GX / Latios

Strategy
[cardimg name=”Professor Kukui” set=”Sun and Moon” no=”148″ align=”right” c=”custom”]Let me get the job done![/cardimg]
This deck follows a similar strategy to most [card name=”Golisopod-GX” set=”Burning Shadows” no=”17″ c=”name”][/card] decks, but it does take the idea of making KOs happen and runs with it. Between having a very efficient attacker in the form of Golisopod-GX, adding snipe damage in Latios, and adding damage with both [card name=”Choice Band” set=”Guardians Rising” no=”121″ c=”name”][/card] and [card name=”Professor Kukui” set=”Sun and Moon” no=”128″ c=”name”][/card], this deck seems to have answers for everything. Here is how some situations can play out to hit some numbers.
- [card name=”Tapu Koko” set=”Sun and Moon Black Star Promos” no=”SM30″ c=”name”][/card]’s Flying Flip = 20 damage
- [card name=”Latios” set=”Shining Legends” no=”41″ c=”name”][/card]’ Break Through = 30 damage
- [card name=”Tapu Lele-GX” set=”Guardians Rising” no=”60″ c=”name”][/card]’s Energy Drive with two Energy = 40 damage
- [card name=”Golisopod-GX” set=”Burning Shadows” no=”17″ c=”name”][/card]’s First Impression staying Active + [card name=”Professor Kukui” set=”Sun and Moon” no=”128″ c=”name”][/card] = 50 damage
- [card name=”Latios” set=”Shining Legends” no=”41″ c=”name”][/card]’ Break Through + [card name=”Choice Band” set=”Guardians Rising” no=”121″ c=”name”][/card] = 60 damage
- [card name=”Tapu Lele-GX” set=”Guardians Rising” no=”60″ c=”name”][/card]’s Energy Drive with two Energy + [card name=”Choice Band” set=”Guardians Rising” no=”121″ c=”name”][/card] = 70 damage
- [card name=”Oranguru” set=”Sun and Moon Black Star Promos” no=”SM13″ c=”name”][/card]’s Psychic when they have no Energy attached+ [card name=”Professor Kukui” set=”Sun and Moon” no=”128″ c=”name”][/card] = 80 damage
- [card name=”Tapu Lele-GX” set=”Guardians Rising” no=”60″ c=”name”][/card]’s Energy Drive with three Energy total + [card name=”Choice Band” set=”Guardians Rising” no=”121″ c=”name”][/card] = 90 damage
- [card name=”Golisopod-GX” set=”Burning Shadows” no=”17″ c=”name”][/card]’s Armor Press = 100 damage
- [card name=”Oranguru” set=”Sun and Moon Black Star Promos” no=”SM13″ c=”name”][/card]’s Psychic when they have an Energy attached + [card name=”Choice Band” set=”Guardians Rising” no=”121″ c=”name”][/card] = 110 damage
- [card name=”Golisopod-GX” set=”Burning Shadows” no=”17″ c=”name”][/card]’s First Impression from the Bench = 120 damage
- [card name=”Golisopod-GX” set=”Burning Shadows” no=”17″ c=”name”][/card]’s Armor Press + [card name=”Choice Band” set=”Guardians Rising” no=”121″ c=”name”][/card] = 130 damage
- [card name=”Golisopod-GX” set=”Burning Shadows” no=”17″ c=”name”][/card]’s First Impression from the Bench + [card name=”Professor Kukui” set=”Sun and Moon” no=”128″ c=”name”][/card] = 140 damage
- [card name=”Golisopod-GX” set=”Burning Shadows” no=”17″ c=”name”][/card]’s Crossing Cut GX = 150 damage
- [card name=”Latios” set=”Shining Legends” no=”41″ c=”name”][/card]’ Break Through + [card name=”Golisopod-GX” set=”Burning Shadows” no=”17″ c=”name”][/card]’s Armor Press + [card name=”Choice Band” set=”Guardians Rising” no=”121″ c=”name”][/card] = 160 damage

- [card name=”Latios” set=”Shining Legends” no=”41″ c=”name”][/card]’ Break Through + [card name=”Golisopod-GX” set=”Burning Shadows” no=”17″ c=”name”][/card]’s First Impression from the Bench + [card name=”Choice Band” set=”Guardians Rising” no=”121″ c=”name”][/card] + [card name=”Professor Kukui” set=”Sun and Moon” no=”128″ c=”name”][/card] = 200 damage
- [card name=”Oranguru” set=”Sun and Moon” no=”113″ c=”name”][/card]’s Psychic when they have five Energy attached + [card name=”Choice Band” set=”Guardians Rising” no=”121″ c=”name”][/card] + [card name=”Professor Kukui” set=”Sun and Moon” no=”128″ c=”name”][/card] = 210 damage
- [card name=”Tapu Koko” set=”Sun and Moon Black Star Promos” no=”SM30″ c=”name”][/card]’s Flying Flip + [card name=”Golisopod-GX” set=”Burning Shadows” no=”17″ c=”name”][/card]’s Crossing Cut GX + [card name=”Choice Band” set=”Guardians Rising” no=”121″ c=”name”][/card] + [card name=”Professor Kukui” set=”Sun and Moon” no=”128″ c=”name”][/card] = 220 damage
- [card name=”Latios” set=”Shining Legends” no=”41″ c=”name”][/card]’ Break Through + [card name=”Latios” set=”Shining Legends” no=”41″ c=”name”][/card]’ Break Through + [card name=”Golisopod-GX” set=”Burning Shadows” no=”17″ c=”name”][/card]’s First Impression from the Bench + [card name=”Choice Band” set=”Guardians Rising” no=”121″ c=”name”][/card] + [card name=”Professor Kukui” set=”Sun and Moon” no=”128″ c=”name”][/card] = 230 damage
While some of these numbers may be viewed as a stretch, these numbers provide different scenarios that you may stumble upon that you now have a way to get out of. Overall, the goal of this deck list is to take Knock Outs as efficiently as possible, using all resources to allow those Knock Outs happen.

Card Inclusions
Quite a few cards in this list are common inclusions in most lists that are played in the Standard metagame. Below are a few key pieces to the deck or obscure techs that are played less in general.
Three Golisopod-GX and Four Wimpod
[card name=”Golisopod-GX” set=”Burning Shadows” no=”17″ c=”name”][/card] is the star of the deck and is going to be your main attacker in most matchups! Interestingly enough, even though that Golisopod-GX has three viable attacks, First Impression is going to be the most used attack due to its low Energy Cost. If you look through most Pokemon in the format, very few Pokemon can do upwards of 170 damage for one Energy, not including Weakness. That being said, I often plan games around Knocking Out a Pokemon-EX/GX with Crossing Cut GX and I also use Armor Press to survive otherwise unsurvivable attacks. [card name=”Wimpod” set=”Burning Shadows” no=”16″ c=”name”][/card] is the second best starting Pokemon in the deck, beside [card name=”Tapu Koko” set=”Sun and Moon Black Star Promos” no=”SM30″ c=”name”][/card], due to its free Retreat on the first turn of the game. Wimpod is not a strong attacker by any means, so it is only going to be used to Retreat on the first turn and to evolve into the Golisopod-GX.
One Octillery, One Remoraid, and One Oranguru
These Pokemon are the draw power that help the deck run as smoothly as possible. [card name=”Oranguru” set=”Sun and Moon Black Star Promos” no=”SM13″ c=”name”][/card] can also be used to attack troublesome Pokemon, such as [card name=”Hoopa” set=”Shining Legends” no=”55″ c=”name”][/card] or [card name=”Alolan Ninetales” set=”Burning Shadows” no=”28″ c=”name”][/card], and can be used to attack Pokemon who require plenty of Energy, such as [card name=”Gardevoir-GX” set=”Burning Shadows” no=”93″ c=”name”][/card]. It is recommended to use Intruct before Abyssal Hand for the most optimal cards drawn to maximize the cards in your hand during your turn.
Three Latios
[cardimg name=”Latios” set=”Shining Legends” no=”41″ align=”right” c=”custom”]I can snipe things![/cardimg]
As explained above in the quick strategy portion of this article, [card name=”Latios” set=”Shining Legends” no=”41″ c=”name”][/card] can be used to make otherwise impossible Knock Outs happen. Latios can sustain some damage at a fair 110 HP, so it is possible to use Break Through more than once in a game. Overall, Latios makes numbers happen and can provide a strong damage modifier in a pinch.
Two Professor Kukui
Similar to Latios, [card name=”Professor Kukui” set=”Sun and Moon” no=”128″ c=”name”][/card] allows us to hit some numbers that make our lives easier in most matchups! Before, it was only possible to OHKO a [card name=”Tapu Lele-GX” set=”Guardians Rising” no=”60″ c=”name”][/card] by using Crossing Cut GX and a [card name=”Choice Band” set=”Guardians Rising” no=”121″ c=”name”][/card], but we can now use First Impression, a [card name=”Choice Band” set=”Guardians Rising” no=”121″ c=”name”][/card], and a Professor Kukui to get the job done. As explained in the quick strategy section, Professor Kukui can be used to hit numbers all the way up to the popular 230 HP [card name=”Gardevoir-GX” set=”Burning Shadows” no=”93″ c=”name”][/card].
One Special Charge
With the deck relying on Latios and [card name=”Tapu Koko” set=”Sun and Moon Black Star Promos” no=”SM30″ c=”name”][/card] using Double Colourless Energy more than a traditional [card name=”Golisopod-GX” set=”Burning Shadows” no=”17″ c=”name”][/card] deck, [card name=”Special Charge” set=”Steam Siege” no=”105″ c=”name”][/card] seems like a natural choice in this list. However, beyond bring back some Double Colourless Energy throughout the game, Special Charge has the draw back of being a dead card in the early game. I want to experiment with adding in an [card name=”Espeon-EX” set=”BREAKpoint” no=”52″ c=”name”][/card] and I feel this might be the cut for that card. On one hand, I want to have access to Double Colourless Energy throughout the entirety of my games, but I think I may enjoy having the option to devolve my opponent’s board. This is a debatable spot in the deck and will most likely leave me going back and forth up until London.
Matchups
This can be one of the hardest aspects of the game to grasp in the forefront of a huge tournament such as an International Championships due to Shining Legends and Crimson Invasion being released. That being said, the below matchups seem to be how the metagame is going to shape up for London.
Gardevoir-GX – Even
This is a matchup that can be tough because you need to be able to produce specific amounts of damage in order to keep up with the pace of their deck. In order to win, you need to be able to utilize [card name=”Latios” set=”Shining Legends” no=”41″ c=”name”][/card] to bring down opposing threats so that [card name=”Golisopod-GX” set=”Burning Shadows” no=”17″ c=”name”][/card] can KO them. Here are a few situations:
Break Through 30 on a Sylveon-GX, 30 on a Ralts
[card name=”Sylveon-GX” set=”Guardians Rising” no=”92″ c=”name”][/card] is now at 170 HP and can be KOd by First Impression + [card name=”Choice Band” set=”Guardians Rising” no=”121″ c=”name”][/card] + [card name=”Professor Kukui” set=”Sun and Moon” no=”128″ c=”name”][/card]. Alternatively, you can use Break Through again to avoid using a Professor Kukui to KO the Sylveon-GX. [card name=”Gardevoir-GX” set=”Burning Shadows” no=”93″ c=”name”][/card] can now be anywhere from 170 HP to 200 HP remaining and can be KOd a few different ways. You have the option to use Crossing Cut GX + Choice Band + Professor Kukui to do 200 damage or you can lower that threshold if it has 170 HP left. [card name=”Oranguru” set=”Sun and Moon Black Star Promos” no=”SM13″ c=”name”][/card] can also become a lifesaver in any of these situations if your opponent decides to OHKO a Golisopod-GX. A Golisopod-GX that has a single Grass Energy attached to it can be KOd by a Gardevoir-GX with five to six Energy attached. That being said, Oranguru can do anywhere between 160 to 210 damage depending on the amount of Energy attached and if you have access to Choice Band or Professor Kukui.
[cardimg name=”Mr. Mime” set=”BREAKthrough” no=”97″ align=”right” c=”custom”]I hope this card isn’t played at London![/cardimg]
Break Through for 30 on a Ralts and 30 on Another Ralts
While this play seems enticing, I have not had it occur in my testing as often as I would like. If you think of it rationally, your opponent will most likely see this play and try to avoid it happening. However, we can force this on our opponent by using [card name=”Guzma” set=”Burning Shadows” no=”115″ c=”name”][/card] to force a [card name=”Ralts” set=”Burning Shadows” no=”91″ c=”name”][/card] to the Active position. The best part about this play is that [card name=”Sylveon-GX” set=”Guardians Rising” no=”92″ c=”name”][/card] is a common crutch in Gardevoir-GX decks nowadays and you may be able to Knock Out two Ralts on your second turn if you can repeat the Break Through. One of the Ralts can be replaced with a Remoraid in this situation because if you get off a third Break Through, you can also KO an [card name=”Octillery” set=”BREAKthrough” no=”33″ c=”name”][/card] to halt their set-up mid-game.
Break Through + Choice Band on a Tapu Lele-GX and a Ralts
If your opponent started with a [card name=”Tapu Lele-GX” set=”Guardians Rising” no=”60″ c=”name”][/card], there is a possibility of them not being able to Retreat out of the Active position. If we are able to capitalize on this and hit it with a Choice Band, we can put Tapu Lele-GX in the range of a normal First Impresson KO. I do want to stress that it is always recommended to hit a Ralts with Break Through due to Gardevoir-GX being able to overpower us if left alone.
Hopefully those situations explain some of the scenarios where Latios can shine and help get you out of some pesky situations. The most important thing to note is the prevalence of planning out your six Prize cards in this matchup. My ideal game plan is to usually KO a Gardevoir-GX, a Sylveon-GX, and a Tapu Lele-GX. I usually try to save my Tapu Lele-GX for a Crossing Cut GX with a Choice Band attached and follow my Break Through math for both Sylveon-GX and Gardevoir-GX. Sometimes you are thrown an easier route, such as KOing two Ralts, but that just means we need to KO one less GX Pokemon. All of that being said, I think this is a manageable matchup if you have a decent hand and can keep up to your opponents pace throughout the game.
Buzzwole-GX / Garbodor – Favourable
The throwback to the [card name=”Landorus-EX” set=”Boundaries Crossed” no=”89″ c=”name”][/card] and [card name=”Garbodor” set=”Dragons Exalted” no=”54″ c=”name”][/card] deck from a few formats ago, this deck has spiritually evolved into a strong contender for London. I know that this is often one of the most debated decks going into London because some say it won’t be played and I have speculated with others that it could be upwards of 40% of the field. Either way, we can at least assume that there is a possibility of facing this new deck.
Positively, through my testing, I can confirm that this is one of the better matchups due to [card name=”Latios” set=”Shining Legends” no=”41″ c=”name”][/card] having a type advantage over [card name=”Buzzwole-GX” set=”Crimson Invasion” no=”57″ c=”name”][/card]! A single Break Through can do 60 damage to a Buzzwole-GX and that damage doubles as soon as you attach a [card name=”Choice Band” set=”Guardians Rising” no=”121″ c=”name”][/card]. If you follow this route, you can promptly two shot a Buzzwole-GX, all while chipping away at your opponents Bench. Interestingly, it is possible to win on the first turn of the game if your opponent starts with a [card name=”Trubbish” set=”BREAKpoint” no=”56″ c=”name”][/card] and you attack with Latios in combination with a [card name=”Professor Kukui” set=”Sun and Moon” no=”128″ c=”name”][/card] to hit for 100 damage! Furthermore, in this matchup, we don’t need to worry about [card name=”Garbodor” set=”BREAKpoint” no=”57″ c=”name”][/card] blocking our Abilities because we are usually non-reliant on Abilities after we get through the early game. If it is the other [card name=”Garbodor” set=”Guardians Rising” no=”51″ c=”name”][/card] that you fear, we also play an impressively low amount of Item cards in the deck list, giving your opponent less options to attack with. Overall, even when you take out the advantage that Latios has over Buzzwole-GX, First Impression can easily two shot a Buzzwole-GX!
Drampa-GX / Garbodor – Favourable
This matchup follows almost a similar path to the Buzzwole-GX / Garbodor matchup due to the similarity in their deck construction. The biggest difference in this matchup and Buzzwole-GX is the presence of [card name=”Po Town” set=”Burning Shadows” no=”121″ c=”name”][/card] and [card name=”Drampa-GX” set=”Guardians Rising” no=”115″ c=”name”][/card]! That being said, I have a plan. [card name=”Latios” set=”Shining Legends” no=”41″ c=”name”][/card] can use Break Through to drop a [card name=”Drampa-GX” set=”Guardians Rising” no=”115″ c=”name”][/card] down to 150 HP which allows us to use First Impression and a Choice Band to OHKO it. We do need to play around [card name=”Po Town” set=”Burning Shadows” no=”121″ c=”name”][/card] to avoid getting Knocked Out by a Berserk, but we do play two [card name=”Field Blower” set=”Guardians Rising” no=”125″ c=”name”][/card] to get around this play. As stated above, we don’t need to worry too much about either Garbodor due to our lack of Abilities mid-game and the lack of Item cards that we play per game. Furthermore, most new lists for Drampa-GX / Garbodor are playing [card name=”Shining Mew” set=”Shining Legends” no=”40″ c=”name”][/card] to expedite their Energy into play which gives us the possibility for some easy Prizes early game. With all of the factors listed above, this matchup should result in a fairly efficient win rate.
Zoroark-GX / Zoroark BREAK / Drampa-GX – Favourable
[cardimg name=”Zoroark” set=”BREAKthrough” no=”91″ align=”right” c=”custom”]I am getting played again![/cardimg]
This is a new deck that pays homage to the deck that Daniel Altavilla played to great success late last season! This can be a bit of a weird matchup because you need to watch your Bench due to [card name=”Zoroark” set=”BREAKthrough” no=”91″ c=”name”][/card]’s Mind Jack attack, but you can easily KO it back with First impression. Even if they are evolved into a [card name=”Zoroark BREAK” set=”BREAKthrough” no=”92″ c=”name”][/card], it is quite possible to KO it with a First Impression in combination with a [card name=”Professor Kukui” set=”Sun and Moon” no=”128″ c=”name”][/card]. Furthermore, Drampa-GX can be taken down with a Break Through into a First Impression paired with a [card name=”Choice Band” set=”Guardians Rising” no=”121″ c=”name”][/card]! That being said, [card name=”Zoroark-GX” set=”Shining Legends” no=”53″ c=”name”][/card] is the biggest nuisance to deal with due to its alarming 210 HP. Don’t worry though, we continue to have options with Break Through. We can control the game by forcing our opponent to evolve certain [card name=”Zorua” set=”BREAKthrough” no=”89″ c=”name”][/card] and then we can focus our snipe damage onto fresh Zorua! Once we are able to bring Zoroark-GX to 180 HP, we can then promptly use Crossing Cut GX with a Choice Band for a KO. Like I stated, the key is playing around the attacks you allow your opponent to copy on your board, the amount of Pokemon you Bench, and the decisions you make when choosing who the Break Through snipes. That being said, you can play intelligently and skate around the problems your opponent throws in your way.
Greninja BREAK – Very Favourable
This matchup is likely our best matchup heading into London and I really need to thank XiaoXiao Long for re-popularizing this deck into the metagame. [card name=”Greninja BREAK” set=”BREAKpoint” no=”41″ c=”name”][/card] was considered dead for a while, Long played it to great success from North American Internationals to Vancouver Regionals placing highly, and now it has re-entered the meta game as a ‘real’ contender. That being said, we take those! Anyways, this matchup is strong based on the type advantage [card name=”Golisopod-GX” set=”Burning Shadows” no=”17″ c=”name”][/card] has over [card name=”Froakie” set=”XY Black Star Promos” no=”XY138″ c=”name”][/card], [card name=”Frogadier” set=”BREAKpoint” no=”39″ c=”name”][/card], [card name=”Greninja” set=”BREAKpoint” no=”40″ c=”name”][/card], and Greninja BREAK! It is usually a tough task for a deck to consistently Knock Out a Pokemon with 170 HP, but we can easily accomplish this feature for a single Grass Energy due to Weakness. If our opponent is out of Frogadier, it is quite possible to use Latios to Knock Out a Froakie hiding on the Bench. Sometimes the Greninja BREAK player can use Giant Water Shuriken to pick up some steam late game, but usually they will fail to KO a single Golisopod-GX before that can ever happen.
Thoughts Before Europe
Well, I hope that this article has satisfied that Crimson Invasion deck list craving for those who are attending London Internationals or for those who will be watching from home. This is my card for card list that I plan on playing for the event and I would gladly play this exact list if the tournament was tomorrow. As for the talk on event caps, I have gone ahead and registered for it! I think this is an awkward stage in the Pokemon world, but it is a growing pain that we will have to deal with as our game soars to attendance records. This will be my last article on PokeBeach heading into London, so feel free to follow me on my Twitter: zlesage_pokemon to see if there are any changes to my list. I am personally excited to see the results of the London International Championships and hopefully I will continue to ride the wave on top of the competitive spectrum. I wish everyone the best of luck who is living out their dream trying to compete for a World Championship invite or for those who are loving and supporting the game from a casual standpoint.
I will see everyone at the 2017 European International Championships, if you haven’t met me in person or if we have just briefly met, feel free to actually introduce yourself to me because I love knowing everybody. Thank you for all of the support, I truly appreciate everyone who take the time to read one of my articles and for supporting PokeBeach.
