A little confused over the whole thing

It's still possible to win without dedicated EV and IV investment, although naturally it's significantly harder to do so. It's your call as to how you choose to raise your Pokemon, although I will say that there's a lot of enjoyment to be had crafting a monster with buff IVs and EVs.

If playing against the standards isn't your thing, maybe try out the UnderUsed tier? As the name implies, only the lesser seen Pokemon are used here. 5th gen is still in its infancy so I'm not sure the statistics have piled up high enough to determine what is and isn't popular, but I'd recommend giving it a look in.

That's another thing that is a little lame about the whole seen is how some pokemon never really see the light of day, but that's how the game is I suppose. I use pokemon from all different teirs and try to get them with the best sets that I can. I'm not sure which pokemon I use are OU, though I try my best not to train pokemon like Garchomp and so forth, as they're just annoying to me.

Thanks for all your input guys, but by the looks of things I'm going to force myself away from competitive battling for the most part, as my favorite thing to do is to start off a new game with certain pokemon, and play through with those, and not to breed for the sake of having battle pokemon, though I have done that in the past. Perhaps one day, or if those EV reducing berries come out where I can EV train my 8 year old Swampert or so on.

For me iv breeding is a lot of fun escpecially when you have little to do after beating the game. If you happen to get a shiny in that game do you really want to start it over and lose your trophy? Competeive battling challenges you in your mind to think of new strategies and stuff. I just finshed up on my sp blaziken ( obiously not iv breed but nontheless) to find out that it is banned, but i still have fun. Sometimes games seem unfun when you lose all the time (cough: mario....) but when you do these things you start to win more and enjoy the scence. I know I went through it the first time it started it seemed boring but if you just try it will defeinatly get fun. I guarunee you. Why do you think most of the population of pokemon players do it? Because it gives you a thrill of excitment seeing your fav against anothers. And you don't even have to have Ou pokes I do perefectly fine with my shuckle! Just use what you like and have fun. You'll never know it unless you try!

See'ya hope this helped your decision.

Thanks a lot. I was reading up on EV training and it actually does sound pretty interesting when you understand it a little better I guess. I'm confused on how you count how many you have gained. I'd rather not have to sit down and tally mark them. haha

I was thinking of EV training a breloom actually, even with it's pesky x4 weakness.

Again, thanks everyone for filling me in, and sorry for being a little sore over the whole matter.
