NOTE: The more I go into this, the more it's becoming a short novel of sorts. I've already spanned 62 Word Pages (using standard font size etc) with just the prologue and 9 chapters. With what I aim to do with this in its completed form... let's just say it appears to be leaning towards anything between 30 and 50 chapters OF THIS LENGTH. If it's closer to 30, you can bet that the story itself will be unfinished, and I'll need to go back to it at a later date to do a sequel. I don't want to put people off, but if you're going to read this, note that it is a LONG read... once it is completed in the months to come, I plan to put the finished word document in this post so that anyone who wants the undisturbed story (meaning without comments at the end of chapters and rubbish) can view it in that style instead.

My aim with this is to take a slightly different approach to the whole story thing than what most have. Most have gone for a completely different idea from what one would see in the games - like the idea of the PMC or the idea that a human could transform into a Pokémon. My idea is not to take this approach, since that would require an extremely imaginative idea that I simply don't have the time to formulate. Instead, I'm planning on going through what you might call a game's storyline. To make it simple, I aim to go through (loosely) what you would go through in a game, but with my own ideas added to spice things up. The idea behind this is that bonds between the trainer and his Pokémon are formed as the story progresses, and it is this bonding that forms the core of my story.

See, there's a good reason as to why I thought about writing this - upon seeing a thread about inseparable Pokémon once upon a time (which I remade to provide further inspiration for this story - find it here) it inspired me somewhat. To think that other people could also form partnerships with pokes they liked in game was good… there are several I really love and share a positive interaction with when I use them. As a result, this is more or less a dedication to those who are passionate about the games, to the extent where they actually DO bond with those that they use. I'll be honest; all of this DOES sound a little nerdy. But it's the truth. People "can" interact with "virtual" things and not be a loser. After all, they're real to someone out there ;)

Right, now that the reason why is out in the open, it should be clear enough that I will NOT be accepting main character bios for this one. I have all the characters I'll have in the story already lined up, based on real people I know (loosely). However, if I need side character bios (such as for Gym Leaders etc), I will ask for them. They will probably be needed, but I won't ask until closer to the time.

What I WILL consider though is Pokémon stories, but NOT if they are posted in this thread. I will only consider them if they are PM'ed to me (but only do that if it is absolutely necessary) or if they are posted in the topic I have made in the Fan Creations Forum. I will NOT be including random pokemon for the sake of it; they will have to fit the story as I go along. But I will consider any and all entrants (that are written to the topic's specifications that is) in the thread.

The prologue is a little… long. But it sets the stage for the events to unfold on, so I apologize for it being a little... wordy at times. It DOES however set the standard for what I expect to produce. For as long as I have the time to commit some hours to this, the chapters will be of this kind of "quality". Whether the quality is good or not is up to you, the readers... well, on with the show!

Prologue:

There are so many questions in this world that cannot be answered... why are we here? What is our purpose? What is "reality"? That last one is defined individually from person to person. However, most agree that something is "real" if you can physically sense it - it can be seen, heard or touched. That may not be the only way to define something as being real though. After all, data in a computer is very real, but you cannot SENSE it in the way you can sense objects in the world. Emotions are also real, but you don't use physical senses to define these.

Why am I telling you all this? Well, imagine a world that bypasses the common conceptions of reality, a world where the surreal occurs everyday. That's right, the world of Pokémon. In THIS world supernatural events dominate, with fierce battles using majestic, seemingly magical creatures take place. Of course, not all battles are fought in the fun-loving manner that they SHOULD be. There are the usual battles between good and evil, with "world domination" at stake of course. But... if this world is merely computer data, is it real? Can you truly get feeling from this? I suppose that once again this comes down to the individual. Hopefully, after listening to this some more of you can understand that these computer game worlds can be just as "real" as our day-to-day world, and that it isn"t only computer-obsessed nerds that can get some meaning from these worlds. If you open up to something, anything can happen... just try sometime, OK?

"Thank you Calum," said Professor Clark, looking a little puzzled at the choice of subject. The class clearly shared this confusion. They were unsure whether to laugh and jeer, or actually try and understand the boy's predicament. As a result they simply stared in bewilderment at the professor, as if expecting commands as to what they were allowed to do. He was focused on other matters though.

The boy whom the professor addressed was a 16 year-old of average height, with thick shoulder-length brown hair, slightly lanky build and sporty attire. It seemed to clash with his narrow glasses on his face however - this gave him a kind of mismatched appearance, almost like a misfit. This suited Calum well, as the year group he was in treated him like an outcast anyhow.

"No problem Professor," Calum answered. "That topic has been clawing at me for a while. It was a good thing you gave us this assignment; I might have never got that off of my chest if you hadn't."

His murky green eyes shifted towards the corner of the room, a little discontent at the response the class had given him. In his mind, this was expected. His year group never understood him - everyone shrugged him off as weird for spending time on a video game that supposedly went "out of fashion" a while back. If only they could see the passion one could have playing a game where strategy was everything... but he knew that this was beyond his age group's narrow frame of mind. "If you weren't into the latest trends, you were a nobody..." that was the sad reality of his predicament. Still, he DID have some supporters, but they were few and far between. Along with these friends, he had formed a clan based on their pastime - somewhere that they were all in their element without the rest of the school ridiculing them. It was here that Calum came alive; it was here where he was understood.

They had their own room for after school activities set up. The principle allowed Calum and his clan to use the computer room, along with its Wi-Fi Internet connection, for a couple of hours each night. As a result, the clan held vicious Pokémon battles and tournaments every day, each player honing their skills in an attempt to become the ultimate battler in time for the regional championships coming up.

"Man Calum, you blasted my Skarmory beautifully there! Who would have thought you'd use Fire Blast after Dragon Dance... beautiful! I think you have a real chance in these regionals, I tell you! Your prediction skills are immense nowadays - it's almost impossible to beat you!"

"Aww, shucks, you're embarrassing me Gregor!" Calum blushed a little as the final match ended. His best friend Gregor had complimented him on dealing the final needed blow to secure victory in that day's tournament. Slightly older than Calum, Gregor had much shorter black hair, with crystal clear blue eyes and the true competitive spirit burning within him. He chose more casual clothing, preferring not to associate too much with sports. After all, it had been a while since any sporting activities had been done by the clan... the last three attempts had saw people from the school coming along and bullying them for hours because of it. When it came to games however, Gregor was second to none - his will to win was as large as Calum's and then some. After a quick shake of hands, the two rivals headed off to grab a meal at the local café.

"So... any ideas as to what team you'll use yet? I know you must be psyched about the tournament," Gregor inquired as he sipped his Coke.

"Actually, I'm not too sure," Calum replied. "I was thinking of going with a Choice Scarfed Gardevoir, since nobody would expect that, but I haven't decided yet."

"Well, when you do decide I'm sure it'll be an awesome set-up as always! We have a week still, so no worries yeah?" At this point Gregor was merely trying to calm the nerves of the two allies.

"Yes, no worries," Calum answered. He wasn't sure himself though... he didn't feel right about this one. Something was different from the preparation to the other recent tournaments - there were so many more fliers around than normal. Advertising a Pokémon tournament was never high on the list of any venue's agenda, but EVERY place in town had posters up for this one. Something was amiss... and nobody else was paying enough attention to figure it out.

"Is the device ready for testing?" a rough sounding voice said over the telephone.

"Yes sir," a female voice spoke back. "We can begin testing whenever you are ready. Any time in particular, if I may ask?"

"There's a Pokémon battle tournament this Saturday; I think that would be the perfect time to test our little machine out. It's quite the engineering feat actually - I'm almost surprised your team managed to construct it. And under budget too! That has to be a first for this company... How many do you have ready?"

"Ten sir. Shall I give the order to move them to the tournament location?"

"Yes, that would be ideal. You'll be moving the gadgets to a warehouse-type building in the northeast of town... I'll meet you there to discuss the plan further."

"Roger that. I'll be there in two hours."

That Saturday, Calum and his clan met up at the modern style warehouse for storing the latest computers made over the Internet, to ship out to people around the world. With all the electronics and gadgetry about, this was the prefect place to hold a Pokémon battle tournament.

"Can I have your attention please!? The final match between Calum and Gregor is about to begin!" The commentator was a knocked-out player in the tournament; you could guarantee decent, informed commentary from him. The final match once again pitted the two biggest rivals of the competition against each other, only this time the stakes were higher - prizes were involved.

"Don't think it'll be a walk in the park THIS time Calum!" Gregor exclaimed. "I learnt a few things from our last battle, so it's fair to say that you won't catch me out so easily THIS time!"

"That's the fun part of all this," Calum remarked, hoping to spark a reaction out of his partner. "After all, it would be boring if all fights were as easy as the last one!"

"Hmph, we'll see. I'll get you back for that today, in front of the whole Pokémon community!"

"Always the way with him..." Calum thought to himself. He knew that today was not a day for lack of concentration though; he HAD to win. His reputation was on the line after all.

Half an hour later, the battle was over. After an extremely close match, coming down to the last Pokémon on both teams, Calum emerged as the victor. As the commentator announced the victory the crowd applauded both combatants for a marvellous spectacle, until the tournament organizer came out to congratulate the finalists.

"And now, if the top 10 ranked players in the battleground would care to follow me into the back here? I have a special surprise waiting for you..." Without giving away any more details, the TO headed briskly towards the back room and unlocked it. Calum quickly followed him, along with Gregor and the other 8 players summoned.
"You're probably wondering why I called you here, aren't you? I can see the puzzled expressions on your faces you know. Well, my company (the one who organizes the tournaments around here) has been looking for a while to find a way to bring the world of Pokémon to life a little more. You know, virtual reality and the like. Anyways, we think that we have done it, and we want to test it out. Care to try?"

The players simply stared at each other in amazement for several minutes. To think that they were going to be testing a brand new type of game that NOBODY had ever even heard of being produced! One where the player would actually be truly immersed in their environment, one where they would be in sole command of what path they took. After getting over this initial shock, most of the people in the room rushed over and hurriedly agreed to test the system. After careful deliberation, and much discussion between themselves, Calum and Gregor decided to go along with the idea as well.

"Excellent!" exclaimed the TO. He was clearly overjoyed by the unanimous vote of confidence for his system. "See these pods over here? They're large enough for each of you to fit into. The possessions that you currently have are placed into the pockets in the sides of the pod. You games machine is inserted into the front - that's what allows the system to recognize what game it is being requested to run. Naturally, we only have Pokémon loaded right now, but in time other virtual worlds will be created also. Oh, and incase you are wondering, my technicians will be on hand the whole time you are in the game world, so if anything starts to go wrong you will not be harmed."

Everyone loaded their possessions where indicated to and lay down in the pods, ready for the testing to begin. Calum and Gregor looked at each other with excitement written all over their faces - they were really testing the first truly immersive virtual reality game involving Pokémon... it was too good to be true!

And indeed it was...

"OK everyone, start the system! May you find your true meaning within this world!"

"What is that supposed to mean?" Calum thought to himself as the system went online. Then, after a brief moment the players vanished from the pods! But of course, they didn't know that... for all they knew it was merely a part of the "game".

The TO turned around. He was facing a woman looking at the computer screens behind him. "Well?" he asked.

"There's no trace of anyone here sir. The device must have worked."

"Excellent. Such a fine achievement your team has made Kara," the TO smiled. "Can we locate any of them in the other world?"

"Not yet sir; we haven't managed to create a tracking system yet. However, each of them has their own ID thanks to the games system the input into the device - once we figure out how to use this to find a person, it'll be easy to see where they have gotten to."

"Brilliant. Make sure you finish that task as soon as possible - I need to see if it is at all safe in this other world. If it is, we can proceed with our plans."

"Of course. I'll get right to it." Upon saying this, the woman got up and left the building, hammering a number into a phone as she left.

Meanwhile…

"Calum, wake up! You'll be late for your meeting with the Professor! It's important that you get up today, remember?" A middle-aged woman's voice called out to him from downstairs. It had a maternal feel to it - this person clearly cared for Calum.

"HEY, are you LISTENING up there - wake UP!"

Calum didn't respond. Sighing, the woman went upstairs to see what was taking so long.

"He just doesn't learn, does he? All those late nights... Clefairy, you know what to do." At that moment, a flash of red light revealed a pink fairy Pokémon, who proceeded to use Wake-Up-Slap on Calum!

"Ouch... what on earth happened?" Calum exclaimed, holding his cheek from where he was slapped. His eyes widened when he noticed Clefairy bouncing up and down on top of him however. "What the! There's a Clefairy on me! What is this, some kind of joke!?"

"Oh come now dear, you know Clefairy... I've had her for a long time, and you two are best pals right?"

"Uhh..."

"Gee, maybe she hit you too hard this time. Are you OK? You're out of sorts today... and today of all days too."

Calum was puzzled. "What's so special about today?"

The woman's expression became stern. "Don't tell me you’ve forgotten about it? You have a meeting with Professor Willow today!" Upon seeing my blank expression, she continued. "To get your first Pokémon! You're far too late as it is! Get going already!"

"Wh-what!" Calum exclaimed, not quite knowing how this all happened, or even who this woman was. All he knew was that he had to get down to the lab to meet some professor for a pokemon, and fast! After all, they may all have already gone!

As he raced out of the door, Calum heard a voice calling. "Don't forget to come back after you get your Pokémon... I have something to help you out before you leave on your journey through Foretta!"

I'll post the first chapter (the true start of the journey) once I get some reviews on this. I hope you found that somewhat entertaining... it was hard to write since I didn’t particularly like how I was forming it at times, but it’s not THAT bad I guess...

EDIT: I apologize if anyone was reading that just after I put it up - I tried to edit something and it removed all the apostrophe's, hyphen etc. that I used in word... it was pretty illegible, but I've fixed that now. Remind me never to edit the post on here first... oh well.

RE: Mysteries of the Mind - A Trainer's Vision

*Sighes* well... no real reception for this so far then? Have I gone too far with this? As in... has the detail, or maybe the subject, been a little overwhelming to you guys?

I really hope not, because I'm looking forward to writing this... but I will NOT write without some form of reception. I DID complete the first chapter before I put my "prologue" up though... so I'm going to post that here just now. I can only hope that, after reading this, SOMEONE out there actually takes the time to read this and comment on it. I'm open to all forms of criticism, and even some praise if you're feeling generous :p

I think it may take a little while for some proper battling "action" to happen though - nothing major went on in that sense in the previous chapter. However, IMHO I'm building things up in the proper fashion. That is to say, you don't get action immediately in the games, so I'm not about to start with it immediately here either. It's coming very shortly though - just try and understand what I've written so far to make sure you know what is going on when action DOES come up.

OK... enough of that rubbish, here's what I've got for chapter 1. This is as far as my story has gone so far - I won't be pursuing this any further if nobody comments on it at all.

Chapter 1 – And so it begins…

Why is it again that mankind must try to solve life’s mysteries? What compels us to attempt to do so? Ha, I guess that in itself is a mystery. One could forever lose their mind in the realm of philosophy; by attempting to understand what is impossible to understand, we lose all meaning in our lives. That is not what we are meant for. No, our meaning is merely to survive like the rest. However, we are strangely set apart from most other species… we have a higher level of communication and intelligence than those simpler life forms around us. Thing is, does this make us superior? We clearly seem to think so. However, surely those who flaunt their “superiority” are actually the inferior species? One boy is about to embark on a journey that portrays just that…

“Got to get to the professor’s lab FAST,” muttered Calum as he raced towards the open fields. He was still a little over-awed by the whole situation he found himself in – in the brief time he had had to gather information, he was in a pokemon world. The woman who used her Clefairy to wake him up was actually his mother, and he was in the currently unknown (to him at least) region of Foretta. He was about to meet Professor Willow in order to acquire his first Pokémon. He had also aged somewhat in the transfer process – he was now a young adult of 19. His hair, eyes, build and clothing were all still the same, however. It was all still a blur to him – the last thing he remembered was looking at Gregor in excitement at he thought of testing a new game out… it appears that the TO had lied about what his “system” was designed to do. Not that Calum had time to worry about all that though - he had far more immediate concerns on his mind.

With all of the running he had done, Calum found himself in an open field. “I’ve gone the wrong way… WHY didn’t I ask for directions before I left! Idiot…” he angrily muttered to himself. He looked around, desperate to find someone who could tell him which direction to go. Then, out of nowhere, A Starly came and tackled him from behind! Calum fell to the floor in shock, then scrambled round and saw the little bird readying another charge. “Great, just what I needed…” he thought.

As the Starly began its charge, a thundershock came from far away and struck it to the ground! Soon after, a small red and white ball was thrown at the Starly as it struggled to try and get back in the air. It collided with the tiny bird, opening up and encapsulating it in a flash of red light. After much shaking on the ground, the ball stopped. A young boy ran up to it and grabbed it, punching the air in delight as he did so.

“YEAH, my first wild Pokémon! Dad’s gonna be SO proud of this… huh?” The boy turned around, his pale grey eyes looking straight at Calum. “Are you OK? It looked like that Starly was giving you a rough time. Why didn’t you send a Pokémon to defend yourself?” he inquired.

Calum got up, looking rather sheepish. “I actually… don’t have a Pokémon yet. I’m trying to find Professor Willow’s laboratory so I can get my first one, but I didn’t ask for directions and got lost…”

“Oh, you’re looking for dad? Yeah, he’s still at the lab waiting for someone,” the boy spoke feverishly, clearly excited at the prospect of helping a new person out. “I’ll take you there just now – I need to show him my awesome new Starly anyhow.”

“Sure, let’s go,” Calum said, dusting himself off. “By the way, my name’s Calum. What’s yours?”

“My name’s Ryan,” the little boy replied. “Hang on… did you just say you were Calum? THE Calum? The one my father’s been talking about for ages?”

“I’m… famous?” Calum didn’t know what to say. He didn’t even know anyone or anything about this land, and yet he’s been talked about for a long time… how could this be?

“My dad is really looking forward to you starting off on your adventure! You’ve done so well in the simulators… he’s adamant that you’ll be a Pokémon Master soon enough!”

“Really…” Calum thought to himself. Now wasn’t the time for thoughts like that however - the pair had made it back to the lab during the conversation and were greeted by an ageing man with wise-looking glasses on.

Ryan was the first to speak. He rushed up to the old man and shouted, “Dad, look what I got! I caught this Starly that was attacking Calum outside of the village here! It should be really cool later on!”

“Excellent work son! You’ll make a fantastic trainer in the future, mark my words!” The old man was clearly just as excited as his son at the capture of the bird. Ryan let it out of the poke ball to show his father. “Hmm… naturally it needs medical attention after the battle. Run inside and use the Healing Machine to get it back in tip-top shape now!”

“Yes Father,” Ryan said as he ran indoors to heal his new Pokémon.

The man’s attention was then drawn to Calum standing in his doorway. “Ah, you must be Calum. I’ve heard so much about your battle simulator prowess. You’re quite the trainer, let me tell you!” His voice was so calm, so… reassuring. It felt as if he could say no lies, and that he couldn’t ever do any harm to anyone. Calum simply looked back at the professor, trying to absorb everything that was going on around him. “You are a tad late however… nevertheless, come out into my garden and we’ll see what we can rustle up for you to begin your journey with.”

Calum followed the professor outside, where he saw a small collection of poke balls in a rather large open field. The glinted slightly in the sun, which was already beggining to set. "This world has seasons too then," Calum thought to himself. It was winter in the "real" world, and despite not being cold it was clearly winter here too.

“Now,” the professor started, “there aren’t many left after earlier. Most of the people have already been here today, and so almost all of the Pokémon have been taken. I must say, the only 3 I have left are rather… unsuitable for starters.”

“What do you mean?” Calum asked, curious as to the nature of the Pokémon in question.

Professor Willow sighed. “Well, let’s just say that two aren’t exactly all that tame yet, and the other one is a tad depressed, to say the least. The two that are untamed were only caught this morning, which explains why they aren’t at all tame yet. I can’t let a novice handle these – real Pokémon are potentially a lot more dangerous than virtual ones after all.”

“I see.” Unsure as to what these Pokémon even WERE, Calum wasn’t in a position to comment. But what did Willow mean when he said that real Pokémon were dangerous?

“However, I CAN let you see the third one… he has a bit of history behind him also, which you will need to be informed of before any decision can be made.” Willow released the Pokémon in the third poke ball, and an Eevee came out into the field! The small doglike creature had a large “collar” of chocolate brown fur around its neck and a luminous crystal pendant around its neck. Its big brown eyes were filled with sadness, however. Calum didn’t exactly pay much attention to that though – his eyes lit up at the thought of being able to control an Eevee as his starter!

“Wow…” he exclaimed, unable to think of anything else to say. “It’s beautiful! I never though Eevee would look so awesome up close...”

Willow interrupted. “Yes, well, not all is as it seems with this little one. You see that crystal pendant it wears? It supposedly holds an ancient power deep within it that once threatened to destroy our world. Unfortunately, it is bound to the one who first wears it until he/she dies. Fearing destruction of their home, the Eevee’s family were forced to separate from this little one, causing it to wander off alone. By chance, my friend Bill came across it in his hometown of Goldenrod City and took it in. He sent it to me since he thought I would be able to help cure its depression… however, it appears that there’s only one thing that could cure that. All this little guy wants is to be with his family – and he knows exactly where to go to find them too. But… the island they live on is uninhabited by humans… and now that he is in a poke ball, there’s no way it can go alone. He needs a strong trainer to take him to that dangerous place and find his true home…”

It was Calum’s turn to interrupt. “Well, I can go there! I’m sure that, as our journey progresses, we can get tough enough to go for sure! Eevee, what do you think? Want me to take you to your family?” When the Eevee heard that, its ears pricked and its eyes lit up. For the first time, it looked truly happy. It showed it by jumping into Calum, who quickly caught it before it bounced off him. "Such warmth... this Eevee HAS to be mine!" Calum thought, desperate to control one of his favourite pokemon so soon into his adventure.

“Hmm, it looks like you’ve already formed a bond with that Eevee with your offer,” Willow remarked, clearly pleased to see the young dog’s reaction. “Very well. I permit you to take that Eevee as your first Pokémon, but ONLY if you uphold that promise and get it to its family. Even if that means you have to let go of it once you get there… OK?”

Calum looked a little disheartened by the last condition, but he agreed to it all the same.

“Good! Well, now that that is settled, here are a few things for your bag to start your journey with.” Willow handed Calum a Pokedex, 5 poke balls and a handful of potions. “These should help you out when the going gets tough.”

“Thanks professor, I’m sure these will help me a lot.”

“Before you go, I have one request…” Willow began, before noticing his son was peering through the door to the lab. “You can come out now Ryan, I can see you there,” he called.

“Rats! I thought I was safe in there,” Ryan exclaimed before skulking out of the door to his father’s side. “Sorry for eavesdropping on the conversation father! But when it’s a conversation with an awesome trainer like Calum, can you blame me?”

“Haha, no, I guess not,” Willow chuckled at his son’s excuse. “But, I have a favour to ask of Calum concerning you. Calum, would you accompany my son on his adventure as well please? I don’t know how well he would cope on his own… being only 14 and all. Since you’re a little older, I’m sure you could keep him in good health, right?”

Calum was slightly taken aback by this. “Well, I…”

Ryan started, impatient at Calum’s indecision. “Oh, please would you!? I can help you out loads; I know lots about Foretta, which is useful for new trainers! I could be your sparring partner as well; that way we can both get better! Oh please please please please PLEASE!?”

Ryan was clearly not going to back down on this one. Sighing briefly, Calum spoke, “OK, OK, I get it already. I’ll take you with me; just don’t get mad if I take things faster than you would like, OK?”

“Oh THANK YOU! With you as my adventure buddy, I’ll be sure to do well in the Foretta league!” Ryan jumped up and down on the spot to show his joy.

Willow was the next to speak. “Sincerely, thank you Calum. You have no idea what it means to me to know that you will be keeping my boy safe out there. It’s a dangerous world; just be careful, OK you two?”

“We will dad, don’t worry! Now that Calum is on my side, nothing bad can happen! Right Calum?”

“Right,” Calum said, almost as an afterthought. Then, he remembered what his “mother” said to him… “Oh man, wait! I forgot that my mum wanted me back at the house for something before I go on this adventure! I’ll be back soon!” Calum raced back towards his house, with Ryan in tow.

A while later:

“Ah, I see. That makes things a lot clearer now, thank you mum.”

Calum’s mother had just finished explaining as much as she could to him. From the new information she conceded, it appears that Calum was dragged into the Pokémon world; an alternate form of the “real” world he knew so well, where the creatures in the “digital” world are very much real. However, it was unclear to Calum what this “world” actually was – was he simply inside a computer, or was this a world as “real” as the one he was in before? And how would he get back to where he was? So many mysteries… “Perhaps the answers will be revealed to me as I travel” Calum thought to himself. “In any case, I have a real mission here – I have to get that Eevee back to his family… and find a way to remove that crystal necklace from it!”

Calum gathered up the things he needed and left with the ever-jubilant Ryan. A new adventure was about to unfold… and a new legend is sure to be born!

Well, that’s the first chapter… action isn’t exactly my strong suit – I’m trying to build a truly great opening for this story, so that it can naturally lead into a greatly (ha…) enjoyable fic. I guess it’s almost a novel of sorts… it’s hardly going to be that length overall (I lack the writing skill for that) but I aim to attempt to get this to a decent length (no less than 19-20 chapters like this over the course of the next 3 to 4 months if I get time). Now that I’ve gotten into the story a little more, I personally enjoyed writing it. I mean, it’s taken me a long time to do (something like 3 and a half hours for the prologue and the first chapter), but it’s been good for me at least. I just hope I’m not bogging you guys down in detail too much.

I’ll be in the process of continuing this IF people actually comment on it – since I’m on my Christmas Break I might well do a lot of this, but come January I may not be able to do as much. This is why I’m thinking 3/4 months as a viable target to have this finished by. PLEASE keep the thread alive with constructive comments in the mean time though!

RE: Mysteries of the Mind - A Trainer's Vision

OK… I think maybe the reason I haven’t had too much reception for this may be the lack of action. People just don’t seem to like a good build-up nowadays…

*Sighs again*. Well, if it’s action you guys want, I guess it starts now. I’m gonna put one last chapter up before I let this go. After that I really want some views on my work before I continue. Maybe this isn’t the right place for a fic of this type, or maybe you guys just don’t want to read it… MAYBE it’s too long for most here even. But I’m speculating now, and the only reason I am is because NOBODY has told me what is “wrong” here. At the very least could anyone who reads this actually tell me why you don’t want to comment on the story? If it’s due to lack of action, or too much build-up, I apologize. I don’t apologize for length though – I don’t feel like it’s a story if there’s not a good length to it. Others (like Muckster) are doing good length stories that are getting reviews, so is it just the fact that you don’t like the story? If so, TELL me! Give some suggestions as to how I should improve the story, give me ideas, and just give me ANYTHING relevant! [/plea for help]

Heh, prehaps it's those annoying paragraphs up top that ask people why they aren't rating it... :p

Right, now that that is out of the way… on to the story!

Chapter 2 – The Journey Unfolds…

Isn’t the idea of “magic” fascinating? The concept that some “force” can defy the laws of physics and nature… simply astounding. Abilities that are impossible to comprehend using standard scientific and logical methods, skills that one can only describe as mystic – it is THESE that the world of pokemon are based on. After all, how exactly is one supposed to endlessly shoot great volumes of water from nowhere?

But enough of that… perhaps there is a form of this “magic” in the real world too. The magic of love is one we are all familiar with to some degree. Most of the time, it is impossible to comprehend – you think you know, but you don’t. Love is almost a law of nature really… although nature doesn’t need love to function; it only helps its cause. Maybe someday we’ll come to fully understand this “force” we call love…

“OK Eevee, let’s go! Use Quick Attack!”

Eevee came out of its poke ball in a flash of red light, and then charged rapidly towards the target that Calum was pointing at. He had just come across a wild Ralts that was separated from its group, and he was determined to catch it.

The Ralts clearly wasn’t expecting the attack, and before she could turn round she was knocked flat over by the brown dog Calum was commanding. She got up slowly, cautiously sizing up her opponent. She let out a cute cry, clearly slightly worried at the thought of facing down Eevee.

“Eevee, don’t let her Growl disarm you! Get in close and use Tail Whip!”

Eevee nodded and walked over to the Ralts, shoving its tail cutely into her face! The Ralts sneezed on a bit of hair from the tail.

“Boy, that Eevee could do with a bit of grooming, don’t you think Calum?” Ryan pointed out. He looked a little bemused by the fact that Ralts seemed to be allergic to Eevee’s tail fur.

“By the looks of it, yes,” Calum said. “But at least the defense of Ralts must have fallen as a result! Eevee, use Tackle and weaken her enough for capture!”

Eevee let out a cry and knocked Ralts down from close range. The wild pokemon tried desperately to get up but she couldn’t.

“All right, let’s catch this thing!” Calum threw one of the poke balls Willow gave him at the Ralts. It shook once, twice, three times! But the Ralts was too weak to put up any more of a fight, and the poke ball stopped shaking after that.

“All right! My first capture! MAN that felt good…”

“Awesome job Calum!” Ryan congratulated Calum on his first capture. “Boy, you’ll be ready to take the Foretta league on in no time at all at this rate! But your Ralts needs medical attention; let’s go to the next town and get it healed.”

“Right,” Calum agreed. “By the way, there’s something I forgot to ask… where exactly did we just COME from anyhow?”

“You mean our hometown? Why, it’s Shrub Town of course! How did you not know that… oh right, I forgot that you didn’t actually originate from this world. You’ve been doing a similar thing in your own world though, right?”

“Well…” Calum didn’t know where to begin. He didn’t have to though; Ryan chipped in.

“No matter anyways – getting to Fir Cone Town is far more important anyway. Once you get your Ralts healed, I want to battle you! I’m gonna see how much I can take before I fall, and you’re the perfect one to fight as my first opponent!”

“Sure,” Calum replied. “It’d be interesting to see what attacks this Ralts knows to start with.”

“Thank you for waiting, here are you pokemon back. I must say, they are in fine condition! Have you had them for long?”

Nurse Joy of Fir Cone Town gave Calum back his pokemon, looking impressed by them. She clearly loved her job – her enthusiasm was un-paralleled in the pokemon centre business.

“Actually, I only just caught this Ralts, and Eevee was the starter I was given yesterday,” Calum answered, a little flushed after Joy’s comments.

“Well, they appear to be doing very well. I hope you’ll take good care of them! See you around!” Joy waved the trainers goodbye as they went through the doors to check the rest of the town out.

“OK Calum, this is it! Are you ready?” Ryan was bouncing up and down on the spot – he was evidently beside himself with excitement at the prospect of this battle.

“Sure, give me your best shot! I won’t be holding back at all, so go all out!” Calum’s eyes had a glint in them that could only be explained by his competitive fire inside – he NEVER backed down from a challenge.

“Then let’s do this! We both have two pokemon, so we’ll use them both in a singles game. Since none of them are particularly high level, it should be an even contest. Let’s go! Starly, come on out!” The little bird that attacked Calum before was sent out, and it looked ready to fight again.

“All right, I’ll use my freshly caught pokemon too! Go Ralts!” the white pokemon looked at Starly, a little intimidated by its bullish appearance. The horn on its head glowed faintly – it could sense hostility and it wanted to stay away from it.

“Don’t be intimidated Ralts, you can take that bird!” Calum tried to encourage his new pokemon. Her horn stopped glowing; she was warmed by the strong emotion from her trainer. Even though you couldn’t she her eyes through her hair, you could tell that they had the same fire as Calum’s after that vote of confidence.

“Think you can take Starly?” Ryan shouted. “I don’t think so! Go Starly, use Quick Attack!”

The bird flew at high velocity towards Ralts, much like Eevee had before.

“Don’t let him get the jump on you Ralts; use Teleport, then follow up with Confusion!”

Ralts disappeared out of sight momentarily, causing Starly to screech to a halt in midair. She re-appeared behind Starly, and then attacked with her pulse of psychic energy! Starly was forced to land as a result – his eyes had a dazed look that clearly showed confusion.

“Oh no, confusion…” Ryan groaned. “Starly, try and snap out of it! Use Growl and try to stop Ralts doing so much damage to you!”

Starly tottered on the ground slightly, then let out a cute cry that cut Ralts’s attack power.

“All right! She can’t do so much to me anymore!”

“I wouldn’t count on THAT Ryan.” Calum commented. “You see, all you did was cut physical attack, but Ralts isn’t USING physical moves. It’s her SPECIAL attack you should be worried about! Now Ralts, since it’s already confused, let’s daze it even more by using Double Team!”

“Oh no…” Ryan gulped, as his bird was surround by a flurry of green and white opponents. Dazed and confused, all it could do was charge straight into empty space. Every time it attacked, it charged through a copy of Ralts.

“Keep it in the centre with Teleports Ralts! Don’t give it a chance to find the real you!”

Ralts teleported each time Starly finished a charge, keeping him in the centre of the circle whilst replacing the copy he had previously attacked. This only further confounded the poor bird, which eventually flew up, then charged straight into the ground in its confusion!

“Starly…” Ryan whispered, desperately hoping his pokemon would snap out of the inflicted confusion so that he could come up with an idea to beat Ralts.

“Hmm, looks like it’s almost out for the count. Ralts, finish it off with another Confusion!”

Ralts quickly carried out Calum’s order. She struck with a psychic pulse that seemed to come from all sides at once! Starly couldn’t take anymore after that; he fell to the ground and wouldn’t get back up. Ralts revealed itself among her copies, causing them to disappear.

"Looks like Starly can’t take anymore Ryan," Calum said. "You’d better call him back." He watched as his opponent withdrew his pokemon, the disappointment evident on his face.

“Well, it looks like that Ralts is really strong… I can only hope that my starter is strong enough to take her down! Go Pichu!”

The poke ball opened to show a tiny yellow mouse, with huge black and yellow ears and a spiky black tail. Her cute pink cheeks sparked with electricity – she was ready to avenge her fallen comrade.

“So THAT’S what you used to capture Starly! I was wondering what the Thundershock came from – it packed a lot of power. Ralts, be careful with this one!”

Full of confidence from her last fight, Ralts didn’t show any signs of backing down this time. She was as ready to fight as Pichu was.

“All right, let’s get off to a good start this time Pichu! Use Thundershock!”

Pichu’s cheeks glowed yellow briefly. She then let loose an impressive electrical burst from them, aimed directly at Ralts!

“First to move again hmm?” Calum noted quietly to himself. “Ralts, use Double Team again! Make sure you put Pichu in the centre again, like you did with Starly!”

Ralt’s horn glowed momentarily, then the flurry of white and green revealed themselves again. Thundershock missed completely, only hitting a copy. Ryan’s Pichu quickly found herself surrounded, just like Starly. The only difference was that Ralts hadn’t made an attack yet.

“OK, good job Ralts! Let’s wrap this up quickly with Confusion!”

“Oh no, you AREN’T getting me with that again Calum!” Ryan exclaimed. “Quick Pichu, use Shock Wave!”

“What! No!” Calum looked on in awe as Pichu once again charged an electric attack up. This time, however, she let loose the attack from all around her body, in a wave of electrical fury! All of the Ralts were hit at once, and the surprised Ralts was knocked off of her feet before she could launch her attack.

Ryan jumped up in his joy. “Great Pichu! Now, dash in and use Sweet Kiss to lay the confusion on Ralts this time!”

Pichu raced towards the ailing Ralts, kissing her in such a way that she didn’t know what to make of it. Her horn started to glow brightly – clearly something was not right.

“Ralts, just stay calm!” Calum pleaded. “Use Magical Leaf – that’ll chase down Pichu and give you time to recover again!”

Ralts heard the order, and used her powers to animate several fallen leaves on the ground nearby. However, instead of launching them at Pichu, she launched them at herself! Confusion took its toll; Ralts was knocked out by her own move!

As Calum withdrew his pokemon, Ryan spoke. “You know, I kinda feel sorry for Ralts… she tried so hard to get your order right that it launched the leaves on herself.” He looked at the ground for a moment, and then turned his attention back to Calum, with his usual look of excitement. “Anyways, now I get to see your Eevee in action!”

“I guess you do,” Calum replied quietly. “You did your best Ralts, good going. Now, take on Eevee!”

Calum’s brown dog came out once again, looking to win the match for him. He looked at Pichu, then at Calum, awaiting his instructions.

“Allow me the first move this time! Eevee, Sand Attack!”

Eevee found the loosest patch of dirt on the battlefield and kicked it up at Pichu, causing her to cry in pain and stumble back a few paces!

“OK, good going. Follow it up with Quick Attack!”

Ryan panicked briefly. “Pichu, no! Charge your body with electricity!”

Still unable to see, Pichu allowed her electric energy to flow through her whole body. Eevee knocked her flat onto the ground with his rapid charge, but he was clearly in a little pain afterwards.

“Wait… what just happened? Why is Eevee suffering…?” Calum looked confused. Ryan piped up.

“It’s because of Pichu’s ability – Static. My Pichu appears to have paralysed Eevee after the contact.”

“Oh, so that’s it? How… annoying.” Calum was irritated at himself for forgetting about Pichu’s ability. Nevertheless, he was still confident.

“Well Pichu, now that it’s not a readily moving target, how about we strike Eevee down with a Quick Attack of our own yeah?”

Having managed to wipe the dirt from its eyes, Pichu began to charge at Eevee. Unable to avoid the incoming charge, he could do nothing but take the hit. However, it wasn’t phased at all… Pichu took more damage from Eevee than Eevee had from Pichu.

“Hey, what gives? Why was Eevee not damaged as much as Pichu was?” It was Ryan’s turn to be confused.

“Adaptability, Ryan,” Calum calmly pointed out. “Eevee’s ability amps up the power of attacks which are the same type as he is. So the Normal-Typed Quick Attack is more powerful that it would normally be.”

Whilst this was being said, Eevee began to move forwards. Determined not to let paralysis get the better of him, he made a charge towards Pichu.

“How can that thing still be moving? It’s supposed to be paralysed!” Ryan looked in shock as his opponent knocked his pokemon to the ground again.

“You’ll need more than paralysis to put THIS Eevee down Ryan! My competitive fire burns within it… it won’t let ANYTHING stop it!”

“I see…” Ryan whispered. “Well, let’s see if it can take THIS! Pichu, charge your body and use Quick Attack simultaneously!”

Pichu’s whole body crackled with static electricity. She then charged headlong towards Eevee, who had stopped moving again due to paralysis.

“Eevee… no! We can’t go down like this! Kick up some sand when it gets close!” Calum was looking pretty worried… he was unsure that his pokemon could perform the command based on its condition.

He should have known not to doubt his Eevee, however. The little dog adamantly got up and kicked up sand into Pichu’s eyes once again. This time however, Pichu was already in full flight with its charge! Unable to stop, she missed Eevee and ran straight into a nearby tree! Dazed from the collision, and shorted out of electricity by the tree, she fell to the floor. She was clearly unable to continue.

“Aww, MAN! That was nasty… crashing into a tree!” Ryan sighed, a little crestfallen at losing in the manner that he did. “But hey, a loss is a loss. Both pokemon got stronger as a result though, right Calum?”

“Of course,” Calum replied, jubilant with his first win. You almost had me there though Ryan. A paralysed pokemon is never easy to deal with. My Eevee showed a lot of determination… makes me want to find its home even more now.”

Ryan reassured his friend. “Don’t worry, we will! Besides, you’re such an awesome trainer – you’ll have no bother finding Eevee’s home!”

Calum blushed. “It’s nice to know that someone believes in me at least…” he thought.

After healing their pokemon again, Calum and Ryan headed towards the next town. They were heading towards Pine City, where the first Foretta League Gym was located. On the way, they hoped to find many more pokemon to add to their teams, ready for battling their next opponents!

OK, so that’s the first “action” chapter out of the way. I reckon most will be similar to that now – with a lot of the story building out of the way, I can concentrate on getting some proper action done. If I’ve guessed right, this is the kind of thing you’ve been waiting for, so here it is. It’s in this way that I’ll attempt to put some of the bonded poke stories into the fic – the capture of Ralts and the appearance of Pichu are the first two to make note of (OK, I don’t think monkeyking’s Raichu was originally a Pichu, but it fits with my story, so that’s how it’ll be :p). Starly is one of mine I haven’t really mentioned yet, but there’s more to come. If you want me to use stories about pokemon you’ve bonded with, I DID make a topic for it. However… as with this fic in general, it appears to have died out. So put them here if you wish. They need to have a little detail to them though – I can’t make a good story out of nothing. Well, you know what I mean. If you truly care for the poke you want me to use, show it by making a nicely written entry for it :D.

Please, even if it’s just to tell me to stop, give me your opinions on the story. If I’ve guessed right, this kind of chapter is what you’re after, but nobody has told me anything… so I can only guess. PM me with your views if you don’t want to post them here. Just get your opinions/ratings to me somehow!

RE: Mysteries of the Mind - A Trainer's Vision

Great idea gamercal i really like it! I have only read the first chapter (the prologue) but i will soon read the rest! Great job!

RE: Mysteries of the Mind - A Trainer's Vision

I'm glad you like what you've read! I realise that it might be a little... overwhelming, for those who are used to reading the average chapters of fics on here. But... I wouldn't have been able to bring myself to write anything shorter. I despise those who can't be bothered to write something of a decent length (no deatil or effort involved in that). These fics are often not the most entertaining of things to sit down and look at as a result of having no detail in them. However, a fic like yours, or this one, has a lot more to get the reader hooked with, so the chance of making readers happy is much higher.

Now, I know you only read to prologue, but I knew you'd take a look at this at some point (thanks for that :D). As a result, I decided to give the next chapter a go for anyone who has followed this somewhat. It's somewhat longer than I anticipated (like, 8 MS Word pages o_O)... and I didn't even get everything finished either... ack! I'd better put it up before I spoil anything ;)

Chapter 3: Reunion at the Pine Gym!

“OK Ralts, wrap this fight up with Magical Leaf!”

Ralts used the leaves on the ground to strike at her foe. The opponent was another trainer’s Sentret, and it was already heavily weakened by Ralts’s powerful confusion attack. Unable to avoid the chasing leaves, it was cleanly struck. There was no getting up after that.

“Well done Calum,” Ryan shouted, pleased to see his friend win the fight. Calum’s opponent, a young child with bright blue shorts and a yellow t-shirt, went up to him and shook his hand after returning his pokemon.

“You’re so strong!” he exclaimed. “I couldn’t compete at all… have you been to the Pine City Gym? Someone like you could do really well there I think.”

Calum was quick to answer. “We’re on our way to Pine City just now actually. There’s a gym there? Great… good place to start in this league I suppose!” Calum’s competitive fire was burning inside once again… he couldn’t wait to get started.

The youngster wasn’t finished, however. “Wait, how many pokemon do you have?” he asked? “The gym battles are always three against three… if you only have two pokemon, you’ll have to get another one first!”

“Oh…” Calum said, a little crestfallen after this information. “Well, thanks for the heads up! See you around kid!”

“Looks like we need to catch a few more pokemon before we can make a challenge anywhere, doesn’t it Calum?” Ryan was a little down at the thought of having to catch more pokemon before the gym would let them in as well. However, Calum was determined not to let it get to him.

“Don’t worry Ryan! We’ll get more pokemon as we go along! You’ll see!”

Ryan looked up with a wry smile on his face. “Of course we will. It’s just… I like the two I have – I didn’t want to raise any more for a while.”

“Well… “ Calum started, but he was quickly interrupted.

“Hey, why don’t we get a start on the catching just now!? We need to catch at least one more each before we can challenge the gym after all – let’s go find some!”

“Sure…” Calum wasn’t in the mood to argue. Gathering his items together, he ran out with Ryan back on to the route they had just come from.

Calum and Ryan had managed to find themselves in the middle of a forest path. Towering pine trees on their left, a large stream on their right, and nothing but a dirt path ahead and behind them… it was safe to say that civilisation was nowhere to be found. Of course, this was the perfect place to find pokemon, and it didn’t take the pair long before they discovered a pair out in amongst the trees. A small red puppy dog was playing with an equally small red fox with several tails. They appeared to be having a lot of fun chasing each other around. The fox then noticed Ryan when it was chasing the dog, and cautiously made its way over to him. Before it was noticed, it had managed to get right up to Ryan, and was in the process of sniffing his bag for food when the puppy came and tackled it. A loud thud was heard as the two began play fighting in the middle of the road!

“Wait, what was that?” Ryan asked, a quizzical look on his face.

“There, behind us!” Calum said. “A Vulpix and a Growlithe!”

Upon hearing their names, the fox and puppy stopped fighting and turned towards Ryan and Calum. They looked at each other for a moment, and then stared back at the trainers. It was as if they were waiting for a fight… or food, one of the two.

“It doesn’t look like they want to fight separately Ryan… what do you say? Shall we take them as a team?” Calum was looking tensely towards the wild pokemon, not quite sure what they could do as a team.

“OK, we can catch one each! I call dibs on Vulpix though; it’s so cute!”

“Ha, I thought you’d say that. I prefer Growlithe anyhow,” Calum remarked, with a smirk on his face. “Take to the stage Eevee!”

“Let’s go Pichu!”

The two pokemon came out with a flash of red light, as usual. Eevee looked calm as ever, whilst Pichu simply bounced up and down on the spot. Seeing the pokemon come out, Growlithe charged over, looking to get the first attack in.

“Hmm… Growlithe is definitely confident,” Calum noted. “Eevee, take it on with Tackle!”

The two dogs collided head-on, causing them both to recoil slightly. Upon seeing her friend getting tackled like that. Vulpix quickly stepped in, launching small balls of fire from her mouth!

“Watch out, she’s using Ember!” Ryan said. “Pichu, get out of the way and use Quick Attack!”

Pichu artfully evaded the small flames, and then leapt forwards with a sharp burst of speed that caught Vulpix right in its side! She rolled across the floor before landing on her feet. This time she looked angry…

“Pichu, Eevee, double Quick Attack!” the trainers cried in unison. Vulpix had other ideas however. Her eyes glowed a purpley-pink, and both Eevee and Pichu were slowed to a crawl!

“What gives?” Ryan asked, bewildered with the situation. “Why have they stopped?”

“It’s Imprison!” Calum remarked. “It shuts down attack that both the opposition and the user know. Rather handy move that… we should watch out for Quick Attack ourselves now.”

“No need to worry! I’ll slow that Vulpix down with Thunder Wave; go Pichu!”

Pichu launched a weak electrical pulse at Vulpix. Whilst no damage was inflicted, she was clearly in pain. Paralysis had taken hold! In the middle of all this, Growlithe and Eevee were racing around one another, each trying to lay a Bite or a Tackle into the other one. Growlithe had spotted what was done to Vulpix, and he charged straight towards Pichu! His Bite attack scored a direct hit on Pichu, severely weakening the little mouse. However, Growlithe howled in pain after the attack. Static must has struck it with paralysis on the way through!

“Oh yes, what a stroke of luck! Calum, let’s catch these pokemon now before they recover and launch fire moves at us again!” Ryan threw a poke ball at Vulpix in an attempt to catch her. Calum quickly followed suit, throwing a poke ball directly at Growlithe.

Both poke balls shook vigorously, clearly showing that neither pokemon wanted to be captured. They shook five times on the ground before finally resting… it appears that the paralysed fire pokemon couldn’t break free of their new containers.

“Wow, this is strange… does this world somehow KNOW what pokemon I like most or something? All of the pokemon I have so far are favourites…” Calum wondered as he walked over to claim his new Growlithe.

“All RIGHT! Another new pokemon, YES!” Ryan shouted at the top of his voice. Despite being a little worse for wear, his Pichu was bouncing up and down as well, clearly overjoyed at having a new friend to play with.

Calum snapped him back down to reality. “OK, let’s get these two healed and take on the Pine City Gym, shall we?” Ryan nodded, prompting Calum to send out his Ralts. “OK Ralts, remember where the Pine City Pokemon Centre is?” She nodded. “Can you Teleport us there?” Again, she nodded. The horn on her head started to glow again, and she caused the group to warp back to the pokemon centre, ready for their pokemon to be recovered.

“If you’re looking for the gym leader, he’s in the large green building at the city’s North side. He’s tough, but your pokemon are in top shape, so you should be fine. Good luck!”

“Thanks Joy; we’ll come back with the badge and more pokemon for you to heal!” Calum thanked the nurse for her assistance and ran in the direction she said the gym was in.

When he arrived at the gym, an assistant at the door showed him inside. He was told that a battle was currently underway, and that he would be watching this first before talking to the gym leader. Upon entering the battle arena, he walked onto a plain wooden floor serving as the battlefield. Four pillars supported the ceiling from the corners of the room. The walls were painted in a vivid shade of purple. The colour was so intense, you couldn’t look at it for very long.

Ryan was already inside, battling the leader. His pokemon were healed faster than Calum’s, so he left without him to make sure both of them got a challenge in. Things were looking bad though… he was down to his last pokemon, Pichu. The leader still had a pokemon in reserve, and he wasn’t looking bad with what he had out either. He had a small purple scorpion creature out, with pincers on its tail.

“Skorupi, attack with Poison Sting!” The Skorupi shot a barrage of tiny purple needles at Pichu, who was knocked down to the ground by the assault. It was looking tired… and low in moral. Desperate to get his pokemon back into the fight, Ryan called out to it.

“Pichu, hang in there please!” he cried. “You can do it! I believe in you!” Pichu struggled back to her feet, then looked at her trainer with tears in her eyes. To think that he was so confident in her abilities… her body began to crackle with electricity, and a bright white light suddenly surrounded her! “What the… what’s happening!” Ryan gasped, knowing nothing about what was happening to his Pichu.

The next thing he knew, his Pichu was no longer the same small mouse he knew. Although still small, she was significantly larger than she was before. Her ears were almost purely yellow now, as was her tail. The tail also had a significant fork at the end of its lightning bolt shape… almost as if a bite had been taken out of it. Her cheeks had also changed colour – they were a vivid red, and crackling with energy. She growled softly at her opposition, “Pikachu…”

Calum was the first to speak. “Ryan, your Pichu liked you so much that it evolved for you! It’s now a Pikachu, and it looking better than ever!”

“All right! Now I can win for sure! Go Pikachu!” Ryan called to his new partner. “Use Quick Attack and wipe the floor with that bug!”

It was clear from the next move that Pikachu had gained a LOT of power from evolving when it did. It charged at Skorupi from all angles with such blinding pace that nobody could keep up with it… least of all Skorupi, who collapsed under the strain of taking so many hits in quick succession.

“Well, wasn’t that impressive?” the leader remarked. “Your Pikachu clearly loves you a lot. Nevertheless, it won’t win this fight… I can’t let it! Go, Grimer!”

A bright purple pokemon appeared onto the battlefield. It’s eyes narrowed when it say Pikachu – it knew it had a job to do.

“We can take that thing! Pikachu, use Quick Attack like before!”

“Ryan, wait! That won’t-”

Calum was too late. Pikachu had already begun to charge towards the Grimer, who didn’t move an inch to get out of the way. It hardly had to, however; Pikachu bounced right off of it! Pikachu rolled along the ground in shock – she wasn’t expecting that to happen.

“Whoa…” Ryan wasn’t sure what to say. “That’s Grimer is strange! Pikachu, use Thundershock on it then! That ought to work…”

The gym leader had other ideas, however. “Grimer, use Acid Armor! Melt away from that electric attack!”

The Grimer began to dissolve into the ground, slipping away from the incoming electricity from Pikachu. It then solidified behind Pikachu, striking her with a full-power Pound in the back!

“Pikachu, no!”

Pikachu cried in pain as it was floored once again. As it struggled to get up, the gym leader issued his final command.

“Finish this game off! Use Sludge!”

Grimer shot a piece of its own body at Pikachu, which was nailed on the head by it gunk. She was knocked out cold this time… there was no recovery once she was shot by Sludge!

“Pikachu…” Ryan whispered as he returned the fainted mouse. “I’m sorry… I never thought you would be bounced back by attacking it. I guess I have a lot still to learn…”

“You do, but you put up a good fight. It’s been a while since anyone took me to the last pokemon…”

The gym leader walked over to shake hands with Ryan and congratulate him for a good battle. His attention then turned to Calum, and his smile grew wider.

“Well well… I was wondering when you would get here! Are you with this boy then Calum?” The gym leader looked buoyant upon seeing Calum – he clearly knew him from somewhere.

“Yes, I am,” Calum replied. “Who are you again? You look familiar…”

“Forgotten me already man?” The leader looked disappointed. “I hoped you’d remember the name of the 10th best trainer in the UK. Guess not…”

Calum stepped back in awe. “NOW I remember! You’re Matt! You were at the tournament with Gregor and me! THAT’S how you got here… we were all transported together then?”

Pleased to hear his name, Matt spoke. “It appears so. We all seem to have been given roles in this world, and my role is to play as the Gym Leader of Pine City! And now, I guess you’ve come to challenge me, correct?”

“You’d better believe it Matt!” Calum quickly answered, his eyes burning with passion. “I’m not going down to you – I’m the best in the UK and I’ll be the best here too!”

Matt sneered. “Is that so? Well, let me test your credentials for that title, hm? The rules will be the same as for little Ryan here – three against three, in a singles format. Whoever has a pokemon standing at the end of the match wins.” He placed his pokemon onto a Healing Machine, like the one at Willow’s laboratory. “I had to heal my pokemon first of course. Can’t give you such an advantage to begin with after all, can we?”

“Enough small talk Matt, let’s get this started!” Calum was determined and ready to begin.

“Ha, if you say so,” Matt answered, a note of sarcasm in his voice. “I’ll lead with Skorupi, go!”

Matt’s scorpion pokemon came back out into the battlefield, fresh and ready to fight.

“I hoped you’d make my first pokemon choice easy,” Calum said softly; glad to have an early advantage. “Growlithe, take to the stage!”

The loyal puppy lived up to its name; audibly growling at Skorupi upon leaving its poke ball.

“Clever…” Matt said. “You haven’t lost your touch at all have you? Sending out a pokemon to counter mine right from the start… nothing less that expected from you Calum! But don’t think you have the final edge in this fight! Skorupi, Acurpressure!”

Skorupi stuck the pincers on its tail right into the middle of its back, triggering a relaxation effect. Unsure as to what the move had caused a rise in, Calum opened his pokedex to check it out. “Skorupi has a two-stage increase in Special Defense power,” the robotic voice said. “Its special ability is also Sniper. Be careful of taking Critical Hits.”

“Great…” Calum thought. “Just what I need. Growlithe, use Bite!”

Growlithe charged towards Skorupi as it was removing the pincers from its back. It couldn’t move out of Growlithe’s way in time, and was struck cleanly with the dark attack launched by the dog.

“Well played Calum,” Matt said, with complacency in his voice. “You used the time I took charging up to attack, not bad! However, now that Ember is of little use to you and Growlithe, you shouldn’t pose much of a threat now. Skorupi, use Poison Sting!”

“Watch out Growlithe! Use Agility!”

Skorupi began firing poisonous purple needles at Growlithe, like it had done to Pichu. However, Growlithe was more than ready for it, darting out of the way with impressive speed. Every time Skorupi shot at Growlithe, it would jump out of the way. Quickly growing annoyed by this, Skorupi decided to charge at Growlithe instead.

“Skorupi, no! Get back here!”

“Looks like your pokemon is getting annoyed Matt,” Calum taunted. “No wonder too, with all of the rubbish aim of its. Anyways, Growlithe, can you use Flame Wheel yet?”

Growlithe looked at his trainer blankly, clearly not understanding the order.

“Uhh… well, cloak your body in fire and tackle that Skorupi! That’s how you use Flame Wheel!”

Growlithe jumped out of the way of the incoming Skorupi, then gave Calum a slightly bemused look. After a couple of seconds however, it looked like a light bulb was turned on in its head! It showered itself in flames, and then ran at full speed towards the Skorupi, who was also charging at Growlithe. The result was rather spectacular. Both pokemon were knocked to the ground, but Skorupi was sent much further… it appeared to be in a LOT of pain – embers were visible on its skin. Growlithe winced slightly as it got up, but gradually shook whatever was hurting it off and awaited further instructions.

“Skorupi… it’s burned,” Matt said quietly, the resentment in his voice clear. “It can’t battle for much longer – it won’t get another attack in on that Growlithe. I’ll return it, conceding this battle Calum. I won’t allow Skorupi to get hurt more than it already is.”

“All right, go Calum! One down, two to go!”

Ryan, who had quietly been taking in all the moves used in that fight, cheered when Skorupi was returned back to the poke ball.

“I understand that Matt… it’s a good thing for your bug.”

“Well, it’s a bad thing for your Growlithe! Go Grimer!”

The purple sludge pokemon was sent out, ready to take on Growlithe.

“We can take him, too! Growlithe, charge at it using Flame Wheel!”

“Ha, as expected! Grimer, Acid Armor!”

Growlithe once again cloaked itself in flames and charged at Grimer. As it was doing this though, Grimer began to melt into the floor! Growlithe made contact, but the damage was minimal, and Grimer was nowhere to be seen!

“Oh no… where is that pile of sludge!? Growlithe, try to flush it out using Ember around the room!”

Growlithe attempted to get Grimer to appear by blasting the whole room with small balls of fire, but it didn’t work.

Matt laughed. “Time to reveal yourself Grimer! Use Sludge!”

Grimer appeared to the left of Growlithe, and then hurled a piece of its body at the puppy. It cleanly struck the side of the dog, causing it to crumple to the floor in itd discomfort.

“Better call it back Calum, it looks like it’s poisoned,” Matt pointed out, watching the puppy whine in agony as it writhed along the floor.

“Man, that sludge is more powerful than it looks,” Calum said, quickly returning the ailing Growlithe. “OK, who to send out now… well, I guess now is as good a time as ever to play my trump card! Go Ralts!”

Ralts came out of her poke ball, looking around for her opponent. When she couldn’t find one, she looked at Calum with a confused look on her face.

“Ralts, be careful! The enemy is a Grimer, and the nasty bugger is hiding using Acid Armor! Can you trace its location by using its emotions?”

The horn on Ralts’s head glowed, searching for all emotional energy around it. It quickly identified a hostile force on the right-hand side, and turned to face that direction.

“All right, I knew you could do it!” Calum exclaimed. “Bring it to the surface! Use Confusion!”

Ralts gathered her psychic powers and forced the hostile sludge pokemon back into clear view. It could hardly take the damage caused by the effective attack!

“Gah, Grimer won’t last at this rate,” Matt said, with the same resentment in his voice as when he was forced to return Skorupi. “Grimer, let’s try Minimize!”

Grimer shrank to about a tenth of its former size. It looked impossible to hit now! Ralts was confused; she knew where the target was, but she couldn’t see it.

“Hang in there Ralts! You can find it – just rely on your abilities! Oh, and surround Grimer with Double Team while you’re at it.”

Ralts trusted Calum’s judgement; it cast the illusionary copies of itself around the hostile emotive force, surrounding it.

“Don’t think we can’t find you now Calum!” Matt announced. “Grimer, use Sludge in as many directions as possible!”

Tiny compressed clumps of waste were flung in many different directions at once, causing many of the illusionary copies of Ralts to fade. She had to act fast to avoid being hit on several occasions. It was clear that this strategy wasn’t working this time round.

“Ralts don’t give up! Find your target with Magical Leaf, then strike the finishing blow with Confusion!”

“No! Grimer!”

It was too late for Grimer. As it was busy trying to find the real Ralts, she was creating mystical leaves that hunted down Grimer without fail. Even though that shot wasn’t effective, it told Ralts where to fire her psychic energy, and she used this information with brutal consequences. One full-blooded Confusion later, and Grimer lay motionless on the floor. Back at its proper size, it was clear that it was knocked out for good.

“All right Calum! Only one more left to go! Trounce this guy for me too!”

Ryan jumped for joy when Grimer was downed for good. He was overjoyed for his friend, who was now one pokemon away from victory.

“Argh… as always Calum, you’re proficient at this. Good to see!” Matt called his pokemon back, looking down at the ground as he did so. “It’s not like I didn’t expect this, however. And I KNEW you’d be packing a psychic type somehow. So… I prepared this little one especially for you… take THIS one on! GO!”

Matt launched his last poke ball into the arena. When it opened up, what came out left Calum and Ryan in shock…

RE: Mysteries of the Mind - A Trainer's Vision

lol... there's a war over the character name huh? I'll tell you this then - ACTUALLY Ryan isn't based on EITHER of you. As I said, the characters are largely based on people I know in real life - one of my best friends at uni is called Ryan. The charasteristics are of my own creation, but I'm largely basing the names from people I know. If they actually resemble you somewhat MK then wow, lucky coincedence ;). However, I reckon you're only saying that because of what pokemon he uses (pikachu :p). But... that's mostly cause your story is one of the few I've had so far. We'll see what happens as we go along.

I'm assuming you want to know what happens next then? Well, you can find out now! Chapter 4 is here... :D

Chapter 4 – Old Rivalries Remain Strong…

As the poke ball opened up, Calum could only gape in awe at what he saw. Not because it was hugely IMPRESSIVE, but because the tactical decision involved in using this pokemon at this time was perfect… He had no answer to it with Ralts whatsoever.

Matt had just sent out his trump card, a Stunky. It was a small purple skunk with a large white streak of fur on its back. Its cheeks were quite large, probably for storing some form of poison inside. It was grinning nastily at Ralts – it knew it had this fight beat before it even began.

“Surprised Calum?” Matt asked, his eyes narrowing as he spoke. “You thought you and your little psychic friend were going to take this match, but I had a surprise in store! This may be a poison gym, but other types are mixed with poison… the Dark type is one of them! Now, get ready to lose!”

Calum looked at Ralts, who nervously looked back. She didn’t want to fight this round, and he knew it. Sighing, he spoke. “I guess I need to call my Ralts back then…”

Matt interjected. “I don’t think so Calum… don’t you think I wanted to switch my Grimer out last time? You can’t switch here unless you aren’t going to use that pokemon again. Competitive battles in THIS region are done a little differently from what we’re used to. So… go ahead and switch, but you’re wasting an opportunity to try and weaken my pokemon somehow first!”

Taken aback slightly by this, Calum weighed up the options available. He spoke softly to Ralts. “What do you think? Want to try to weaken that skunk for Eevee to knock out? It might win the match…” Calum was torn by indecision, but Ralts knew what she wanted to do. Even though it was a huge mismatch, she was willing to fight for her team. Letting Calum know of this with her telepathy, she moved towards the centre of the arena.

“Looks like your psycho-girl has made your choice for you Calum,” Matt jeered. “I’m looking forward to this… Stunky, Poison Sting!”

Like Skorupi before it, Stunky began firing poisonous needles from its tail, directing them at Ralts.

“Ralts, evade with Teleport, then use Lucky Chant! Make sure critical hits can’t happen to you!”

Ralts effortlessly disappeared away from the incoming needles, and then started crying an incantation towards the sky. Once she was done, she was surrounded in a mystical blue aura, indicating that the skill had worked.

Matt looked a little surprised. “Hmm… Ralts can avoid my Stunky’s Poison Sting, but can it avoid my charge? Stunky, Pursuit! Take it down!”

Stunky abandoned its previous form of attack and charged right at Ralts. She teleported away from the attack, but Stunky appeared to be able to know where she would reappear every time, allowing him to attack relentlessly. Ralts was avoiding the attack, but barely. It was getting harder with each successful dodge. Calum had to think of something fast… and it didn’t take him long to come up with a temporary fix.

“Ralts… cast Reflect and cut the damage you’ll take! Then use Double Team and surround Stunky like usual!”

Upon reappearing again, Ralts used her powers to set up a clear blockade of pinkish light. Stunky collided head-on with the wall, causing it to rebound slightly. However, Ralts was still injured by the charging tackle… but it was better than it could have been. As Stunky was recovering from the recoil, he was surrounded by a host of Ralts copies, all covered in the blue aura of Lucky Chant, and now glistening with the light of Reflect as well.

“Ugh, that Ralts is surprisingly good on the defense… I compliment it for surviving THIS long, but how much longer can it last?” Matt jeered; knowing his Stunky’s typing made it nearly impossible for Ralts to inflict a lot of damage.

“We’ll see,” Calum said, knowing Ralt’s game would be up soon. “We can at least weaken any attempt Stunky can make on my last pokemon! Ralts, Growl!”

The flurry of Ralts all cried in unison, causing Stunky to widen its eyes slightly. Looking a little less confident, it was clear to see the attack drop in its face.

“Don’t let it get to you Stunky!” Matt said, desperate to end this match-up soon. “Just chase it down again with Pursuit! It can’t last much longer, surely!”

Despite not looking as confident as before, Stunky charged into the ring of Ralts surrounding it, looking for the real one. Unable to make out which it was however, it looked back at Matt for another idea.

“What’s the matter?” he asked. “Can’t find the real one? Then stink it out! Poison Gas!”

Stunky’s eyes lit up – he knew exactly what to do. He let loose a cloud of dirty green gas from its rear, enveloping the circle of Ralts. It was long before the poison took hold – the circle dissipated, and Ralts fell to the floor. Her horn glowed a faint red… she didn’t have long left.

Stunky, on the other hand, wasted no time in tackling Ralts, causing her to cease all motion. Her battle was over.

“Finally,” Matt said, unable to work out why it took so long to knock Ralts out with a dark type. “Your Ralts is a real pain… it knows a lot of evasive moves already. Good job!”

Calum called Ralts back, and then smiled. “Thanks for the compliment Matt. But she wasn’t the REAL winner for me in this fight… this guy will be! Go Eevee!”

Calum’s faithful brown dog came out of his poke ball and growled softly at Stunky. It quickly stopped when a clear pinkish light surrounded it however.

Matt looked puzzled. “Isn’t that Reflect?” he asked. “I KO’ed Ralts! Why is THAT still here?”

“You never did learn how to use that move, did you Matt?” Calum said. “As a matter of fact, Reflect and Light Screen pass on to any other pokemon in your party that comes out, providing there’s some time left on them. It looks like there is for Reflect here, so let’s use it! Eevee, Quick Attack!”

Being covered in Reflect, Eevee had no worries of being heavily damaged from Stunky. It raced along the ground to knock his opponent to the ground, which is did with ease. Stunky looked shaky – it lacked the confidence to launch an attack of its own.

“Man… this looks bad,” said Matt, the look of worry evident on his face. “I have to DO something! Stunky, use Toxic!”

Calum gasped. “No, Eevee, get away from that attack!”

It was too late however. Stunky released the vilest purple fluid it could muster from its body, striking Eevee with it right in the face. No amount of Reflect could avoid THAT move… Eevee was rapidly weakening from the inside. Wincing with every second passed, it looked desperately at Calum for orders.

“I have to end this fast… Eevee, charge at Stunky with Quick Attack, then use Tail Whip just before you collide!”

Although it was hurt, Eevee managed to dart to where Stunky was standing and ram its fluffy tail right up its face! Stunky started laughing uncontrollably; it appeared to be ticklish!

“Stunky, WHAT are you doing!” shouted Matt, annoyed by the reaction of his pokemon. “You just about HAVE this fight! Take it down with Slash!”

But Stunky couldn’t make a move. It was too caught up in laughing at being tickled by Eevee’s extremely hairy tail.

“Haha, looks like Stunky can’t execute that attack Matt!” Calum laughed. He knew that now was the time to end the match. “Eevee, Tackle it! Let’s end this before you’re hurt any further!”

The order couldn’t have come fast enough for Eevee. He turned around and head butted Stunky as it was laughing! Stunky, caught off-guard by this assault, couldn’t take it; it collapsed to the ground once and for all. The match was over, and Calum had won!

“All right, I won!” Calum exclaimed, returning his Eevee before the poison caused it to faint as well. “Excellent game Matt – you’re as good as always. Seems like we didn’t lose our abilities to fight in this other world now, does it?”

Matt returned his pokemon, then walked over to Calum. “I guess not,” he replied. “You did really well in that game. There’s no way that I could have won; congratulations! I have three things to present to you now.”

Calum looked at Matt with a raised eyebrow. “Three things?” he asked.

“Yes, three things. I obviously have to give you the badge as the first so take the Fermenta Badge!”

Matt handed Calum a shiny purple badge in the shape of a barrel. It looked like a container for brewing alcohol.

“Now, the next thing is this CD… it can teach a pokemon the move Toxic. Almost EVERY pokemon can use this, as you know; it uses their waste products to rapidly poison an opposition. Nasty to think about, but… it’s nastier in effect! Take it.”

“Thank you Matt,” Calum said, storing the TM in his bag. “Now, what’s the third thing?”

“My last gift to you is this – it’s the Poketch! This high-tech watch… well, you know what it does. It currently has the clock, map, calculator and team status applications uploaded. Maybe you can find others for it on your journey?”

Matt gave Calum a blue wristwatch, complete with a small card feeder on the side. New applications would go here.

“Thanks Matt, really,” Calum said quietly, not entirely sure what to make of his rival’s kindness. “It’s a great gift to get to help me on my journey.”

“Don’t mention it,” Matt said, feeling sad to have to say goodbye again so soon. “But also don’t forget that it has some phone capabilities as well though! We can battle again when we become more proficient at the style here!”

Calum looked at Matt and smiled. “Of course,” he answered, eyes aflame as usual. “But don’t expect as easy a fight as you had HERE! Next time we meet, I’ll be SO much stronger than this!”

“I’ll look forward to it then. Good luck with your adventure!” Matt waved his rival goodbye and set about clearing the gym up after the fight.

“Wow Calum… you’re amazing! Taking on Matt like that when you haven’t had much experience here yet… simply awesome! I’m your number one fan for and forever!”

Ryan was chattering on about how awesome Calum’s victory was. Calum was having every moment recited to him, and he was becoming bored by it all.

“Hey, it wasn’t THAT special Ryan,” he said finally, after the tenth time of being told about it. “It’s just a match after all, nothing out of the ordinary. Although I DO wonder… since Matt was the leader here, could the others be the leaders of the other gyms? And if so… where would Gregor be?”

“Gregor?” Ryan inquired. “Who’s he?”

Calum sighed. “He’s my biggest friend and rival trainer in the world I come from. We met in the finals of the last tournament we did, and I narrowly edged the match. Then the TO came up to us, and… well, I told you the rest.”

“Oh yeah, I remember now,” Ryan said. “All your friends from the tourney are here, and you want to meet up with them all… right?”

“Right,” Calum said, his voice trailing off slightly. “But Matt only had HIS number on the Poketch… I guess he knows about as much as I do about where the others are.”

“I guess…” Ryan was now the one who was a little bored. The two were walking through Pine City, looking at the different buildings that the place had. There wasn’t too many that were all that special, however. Calum’s Eevee, now fully recovered from the battle, was walking alongside him, as was Ryan’s Pikachu. Eevee’s pendant glinted in the sun, showering the eyes of any who looked at it with a kaleidoscope of colour. As the group passed through the marketplace of the town, this light show caught the attention of an elderly woman, who quickly called Calum over.

“That pendant around your Eevee… how did he get that?” she inquired. Her eyes had a slight tint of fear instilled in them – she seemed to be afraid of the crystal Eevee was wearing.

“Oh, that?” Calum said, surprised that someone was interested in it. “My Eevee had that when it came over here. Supposedly, he was separated from its family when he was younger because it came across that thing. It’s meant to hold a power that could destroy the world… so his family sent him into exile for their own protection. Professor Willow eventually came across him, and he gave him to me as my starter pokemon. I’ve made it my mission to get him back to his family and find out about the power of the pendant… to work out WHY it was exiled in the first place.”

The woman looked at Calum, with the hint of fear still in her eyes. “That’s a very good story young man. The power of friendship may be enough… come to my house if you’re determined to find out about the power that thing is meant to possess.” The woman shuddered as she spoke those words. It was clear that she was afraid.

“Glad you came after all,” the woman spoke, addressing Calum with a darkened tone. “Allow me to formally introduce myself. I am Azalea, one of the three keeper sisters. We live around the region of Foretta, guarding the long-kept secrets surrounding the power of the pendant your Eevee possess. Now, allow me to provide the knowledge I know about that item…”

“The pendant is called the Void Pendant. Long ago, when this region was first discovered, an evil man enslaved three legendary pokemon to create a power so great that the world could be destroyed by it. Using this power as a tool, this man ruled over all… for a time. The greed of this man became so great that he wanted more and more power, much more than he could possibly control. Soon enough, the pokemon of legends rebelled against him. They pooled their power together to create a massive rift in time and space – a dimensional prison from which there would be no escape. In this cell, the infinite power of the legends lay. They tricked the man into going into this void, where he was trapped by the legends. They sealed the rift they had created using a pendant of their own creation… the same pendant your Eevee now holds. In the hands of evil, that pendant could reopen the Void of Power and destroy everything!”

Trying to take all of this in, Calum stayed silent. Ryan, however, couldn’t contain he emotions.

“No way! That can’t be true! There’s not a chance that Calum’s Eevee could hold the power to destroy the world!” He couldn’t grasp the fact that this could indeed be true. Calum interjected before he could say anything else.

“Quiet Ryan, you know that there’s a possibility of this. After all, notice how Eevee can’t take this pendant off?” Ryan fell silent.

Azalea commented on this. “Indeed… I’m guessing that, since Eevee put on the pendant, he has become the guardian of it. There may be a way to remove the pendant though, and pass the task on to someone else. But I don’t know what that is… one of my sisters will know. Melissa in Evergreen City should be able to tell you more – talk to her if you can.”

“Right, will do. Ryan, let’s get goi-”

Calum was unable to finish. Suddenly, a rough man broke down the door to Azalea’s house in a dark green suit. His blazer had a brown leaf embedded on it.

“Hand over that Eevee, now!” he commanded. Gloom, take it down!”

Suspense! SO many questions right now... what power lies in the void? What connection do the three sisters have with the pendant? Where are Calum's (aka my :p) rivals in this realm? Who is the man that barged into Azalea's house? And just WHY are the two known sisters called Azalea and Melissa anyhow?

There's more than that, but they're enough to get a small debate going. So... debate whilst I prepare the next chapter! :p

RE: Mysteries of the Mind - A Trainer's Vision

Ryan... there's a good reason why I don't accept character requests, and this is one of them. I'll make this clear now - NOBODY except me is directly in the main storyline. As I said, the main characters are named after those I know irl; they have nothing to do with the main story. Don't listen to MK - I never actually said he was a direct character in the story. He's merely thinking that since the pokemon Ryan has so far have HAPPENED to coincide with his own faves. TBH, Pika was his, but Starly and Vulpix are coincidence - they're faves of mine, so... ya.

MK, your "role" in this is a little more.. complicated. I'm sure people who are reading your fic as well will grasp this, but I'm not letting anyone know in this one. I've got my PM ready to send you - it'll be with you as soon as this post is done.

Now, for the comments...

Stunky was the perfect choice in that battle. Naturally it had to be a poison type, but to be weak to psychic was suicidal. Stunky was the only pokemon that sprung to mind that fit the bill I needed. Plus... who on EARTH would expect THAT after the cliff-hanger I left in the last chapter!? It's the ultimate anti-climax

Interjected is a real word btw - it's similar in meaning to interrupted. Using the same words all the time is boring though - I like to use my SLIGHTLY above average vocbaulary whenever I can, just to be different.

I'm glad you like the story enough to comment on it like that though - it's nice to see my work appreciated in this way. Considering that this fic may well extend over a long period of time, it's nice to know that people like it.

Now... on with the show! That's right, Calum managed to use his evening to write the next chapter of the fic for you to enjoy! Let's see if any questions are answered in this chapter, shall we?

Chapter 5 – Protect the Pendant!

And you thought I had given up on these sections… how wrong you were. This story is about the mysteries of the human mind as much as the tale of a trainer. More of these mysteries are being uncovered all of the time, but hardly any are ever solved.

Perhaps one of the greatest mysteries of all (at least for the world around us to bear witness to) is the eternal struggle of Good versus Evil. Although it isn’t just prevalent amongst humans, certain attributes of the human mind make this internal war ever-present and ever changing in nature, more so in us than in any other creature. Qualities such as greed, selfishness and lust make for a man of evil. However, kindness, compassion and selflessness are often associated with a man of good. In reality, nobody is really sure if good and evil actually exist. One could argue that there is only power, and those who wield this power determine what purpose it shall serve. Perhaps THIS is the TRUE meaning of the Void Pendant… but only time will tell.

“I’m warning you kid – hand over the Eevee now or you’re going to get hurt!”

The man looked savagely towards Calum, growing more and more impatient with every passing second. He was on a mission, and NOTHING was going to stop him.

“Like I’d just give my partner to a random weirdo like YOU!” Calum retaliated. His initial shock at the man’s sudden appearance quickly faded, leaving only rage in its wake. “Ralts, take care of this Gloom! Use Confusion!”

Upon entering the fray, Ralts launched its trademark psychic energy pulse at Gloom, causing a direct hit that sent it reeling.

“Bah! Gloom, don’t just STAND there; use Stun Spore now!”

Gloom released a cloud of pungent yellow dusty pollen. Ralts sneezed as the dust came closer to her – she appeared to be allergic to the pollen as well as Eevee’s tail. Quickly enough, it took its toll however – she became entirely immobile!

“Ha! Now the fight should be easy! Gloom, get and there and… wait, what!? Gloom can’t move!”

The man stood riveted to the spot in shock as his Gloom became as immobile as Ralts was. His mouth kept opening and closing like a goldfishes. He put his hands in his head and shouted, “WHAT is going on here! How is Gloom paralysed too!?”

Calum laughed. “It’s a little ability of Ralts’s called synchronize! It shares any poison, burn or paralysis condition it suffers with its opposition! Didn’t see THAT coming, did you?”

The man sneered at Calum and Ralts. “Doesn’t matter, we’ll win anyhow! Gloom, use Petal Dance and show this thing!”

Unfortunately for him however, Gloom was completely unable to do anything. Ralts, on the other hand, was looking rather strange. Her horn glowed brighter than ever before, and she released an incredible psychokinetic force from her body! The room was illuminated with a brilliant white light. Flinching from the suddenness of this light, Calum, along with everyone else in the room, shielded his eyes from the glare. Once it had dissipated, everyone looked back at Ralts… or at least, where Ralts was. Ralts was no longer in the room. In her place was a larger, more elegant white pokemon. Her horn had split in two, and now protruded out of either side of her head. Her hair had adopted a more refined look – her eyes were clearly visible now. The “dress” that Ralts had was also more refined – it now resembled that of a ballerina’s skirt. She was also up on the tips of her toes, as if she was dancing. But her eyes showed anything but fluffiness and light; she was ablaze with fury, and it was clear for all to see.

“Wow…” Calum said. “It appears that Ralts got so angry at Gloom that it evolved into Kirlia! Let’s see what powers you have now then, shall we? Kirlia, Psychic!”

Both of Kirlia’s horns glowed brightly, storing psychic power briefly. When they were charged sufficient, she let loose a vicious manipulative energy that caused Gloom to crumple into the door of the house opposite Azalea’s! Stunned into silence by this incredible show of strength, the man called his Gloom back, and then began to retreat.

“You… this is NOT over! Team Leafre WILL acquire that pendant, no matter WHAT it takes!” Upon saying this, he raced out of the door.

“Loser…” Calum said. “Typical that we come across someone like that. Is that one of the men you were warning us about Azalea?”

Azalea got up slowly. “Yes, it was… that was a member of Team Leafre, a no-good clan out to take over the world. They TRY to claim that it is for the greater good of the world, saying that they’ll use the power of the forest to revamp society and make the world a better place, but nobody buys that. If they know about the Void Pendant, they may be attempting to use the power of the Void to achieve their goals… you must not let that happen!”

Ryan stepped up to Azalea to reassure her. “Don’t worry – Calum is one of the best trainers ever to exist! If he can’t keep it safe then nobody can… you don’t have to worry about a thing.”

Azalea closed her eyes. “Well, I sure hope not… but you MUST find out more about this pendant, and how to prevent the Void from opening! I fear that it will inevitably occur, no matter what we do… but you must try and find out how to stop it! The fate of the world is in your hands…”

“Yeah, like I haven’t heard THAT cliché before…” Calum said sarcastically. “Although… maybe it’s actually true… I guess we’ll find out as we go! Where are we meant to be heading anyways?”

“Evergreen City,” Ryan replied. “A woman called Melissa lives there, right Azalea?”

Azalea nodded. “Right, my sister lives there. To get to Evergreen, you’ll need to pass through Birchwood City to the west. There’s also a gym there… interested in the Foretta League by any chance? I see you have the badge from Matt here… so I’m assuming you’ll challenge the gyms in every town, right?”

“Of course we will! We’ll be sure to get all the badges and take on the world!” Calum looked at Kirlia and Eevee, who nodded with jubilant looks on their faces. They were up for the challenges ahead too it seemed.

“In that case take this with you.” Azalea handed a TM to Calum. It was bright yellow. “This TM contains the move Shock Wave. I’m sure you’ve seen the move in action, so I won’t bore you with the details. Perhaps you should teach it to Kirlia there just now?”

“Good idea – I could have use that when I fought Matt’s Stunky.” Calum gave the TM to Kirlia, who placed it onto her chest. As she closed her eyes, the TM‘s colour was drained! She began to pulse with electrical energy. Once the TM’s colour had faded entirely, she dropped it. She sent the electrical energy gathered into the ceiling, showing the move that she had just learnt off for her trainer to see. “Awesome… now I have 3 types of attack to use with my Kirlia!”

“Very good,” Ryan commented. “Now that all that is done, can we go now? I’m getting hungry… plus I need to heal my pokemon.”

“Oh, of course,” Azalea said. “I wouldn’t want them to stay injured longer than they need to. Just be careful…”

Calum and Ryan were heading west, as directed by Azalea. On the way, fellow trainers challenged them. Ryan took up the challenge of a school kid that was on his break for lunch.

“Ready for this?” he asked. “One versus one battle! Hoothoot, go!”

The kid sent out a bouncy owl pokemon that was standing on one foot. Every second it would jump onto the other foot, hooting as it did so.

“OK, I COULD take a type advantage, but I need to raise my team evenly… Starly, let’s go!” Ryan sent his vigorous little starling pokemon out. It was an even match – flying against flying. Neither pokemon was at a particular advantage… on the face of things at least.

“Let’s start things off Starly; Wing Attack!”

Starly spread his wings out as wide as he could before flying towards Hoothoot, aiming to knock it down with speed. Hoothoot had other ideas though, as its trainer was about to show.

“Hoothoot, use Hypnosis! Put that Starly out of commission!”

Hoothoot’s large red eyes began glowing, emanating a swirling pattern that was making Starly drowsy. It had successfully collided with Hoothoot, but crashed into the ground straight afterwards! It had fallen asleep thanks to the owl’s power of suggestion.

“Ack, no! Starly, wake up!” Ryan cried.

“That won’t save it now!” the kid shouted. “Hoothoot, Peck your opponent!”

Hoothoot bounced over to Starly, and then violently thrust its beak straight into the smaller bird! The sleeping Starly couldn’t brace himself for the attack, and took heavy damage as a result. Ryan saw his pokemon take some heavy damage, and cried out to it, begging for it to do something. But it couldn’t move… despite being pecked as harshly as it was, it wouldn’t wake up.

“Hoothoot, let’s end this! Tackle!”

The owl lunged at the Starly, sending it flying over the ground. He appeared to be knocked out… but then his eyes opened. He was finally awake! Furious at Hoothoot for putting it to sleep, it charged, wings spread again. As it flew, it began to glow… something about this attack was different!

Hoothoot was totally unprepared for such a fast attack; it was knocked away over twenty metres as Starly made contact. The glowing light didn’t disappear once the attack ceased, however… it appeared that Starly was evolving!

“Oh YES! Starly is evolving, just like Ralts earlier!” Ryan gleefully shouted.

He was right too – Starly grew in size and became Staravia. His tail and wing feathers had grown larger, and a feathery coil had grown on his head. He looked menacingly at Hoothoot, who quivered in fear under his gaze.

“Hoothoot…” the school kid whispered, knowing that the tide of this battle had turned. “Use Hypnosis again! Try and immobilize it so you can get a clean shot at it!”

Ryan was quick to react this time though. “I don’t think so! You’re aren’t catching me out again… Staravia, Double Team! Use Kirlia’s trick!”

Remembering what Ralts did to it as a Starly, Staravia moved with incredible speed, creating illusionary copies of himself. Not knowing which one to hit, Hoothoot stopped attacking. The sight of so many intimidating opponents made it cower in fear, unwilling to do anything.

“Finish is off Staravia; attack with Quick Attack!”

The starling pokemon raced towards Hoothoot, copies and all. It looked like a titanic clash, and Hoothoot was easily knocked out by the assault.

The school kid sighed as he returned his owl. “Well, we tried our best I guess,” he said softly, “but we weren’t good enough in the end. Congratulations on getting Staravia though; that thing is scary! Maybe next time I can take it… what do you think?”

Ryan shook hands with the kid as he spoke. “Sure! Who knows what will happen… maybe we’ll see each other later on, and you can play me again!”

Continuing along the open route, Calum and Ryan came across a large river cutting across the road. The river had an old wooden bridge running across it. People sporting red visor caps were fishing off of the side of the bridge. The river itself glistened and sparkled in the light of the sun, reflecting all the colours of the rainbow off of its surface. Every once in a while, a water pokemon could be seen jumping from below the water, catching the light of the sun perfectly on its body.

As the two crossed the bridge, one of the fishermen stopped them.

“Hey, are you two trainers interested in a spot of fishing?” he asked. “I’m currently giving these fishing rods away to trainers who have the will to fish, so that they can try and get different types of pokemon! Does that sound like you two?”

Not one to turn down any offer for free things, Ryan instantly agreed. Calum hesitated momentarily, but agreed when Ryan shot him a challenging look. This was yet another form of competition… and he was up for the challenge.

“Excellent! Enthusiasm, THAT’S what I like to see! Right, here are your rods, now… let’s get fishing!”

After casting their lines out into the river, Calum and Ryan waited patiently for something to bite onto the end of the rod. It wasn’t long before Ryan had a bite! Reeling it in, a Marill landed on the bridge. It had the fishing hook in its mouth, but it didn’t look hindered by this inconvenience. Ryan sent out Pikachu to try and capture the aqua mouse that he had fished up.

“Pikachu, Thunder Wave! Paralyse Marill so I can get it fast!”

Pikachu zapped Marill with a weak jolt of electricity, rendering it immobile. However, the plucky little mouse still managed to fire a stream of bubbles to damage Pikachu as well. Angering slightly at this, she zapped Marill a little harder, causing it to drop onto all four limbs in an attempt to stay upright.

“Pikachu… why did you have to go and do that?” Ryan shouted, angry at Pikachu’s outburst. “Never mind…” He quickly threw his poke ball before Pikachu could know Marill out. It didn’t take long for the familiar click of a capture to be heard – Marill was already heavily weakened as it was.

“Great catch Ryan! One more good addition to your team,” Calum said, congratulating his partner. The fisherman got up to congratulate him too. However, he quickly turned his attention to Calum’s rod, which had started shaking violently without his notice!

“Calum, your rod! You have a pokemon on the hook boy; reel it in!”

“Oh, right,” said Calum sheepishly as he dived over to the rod. He caught the pokemon just in time it seemed… it flopped onto the bridge rather pathetically. Everyone on the bridge had turned around to see what the commotion was about. When they saw what was on the line, they gasped in awe.

Calum was in evident shock as well. “No way… how could I have fished up THAT!?”

“Alex, you’d better not be telling me you STILL can’t track the people you sent into that world yet… or there WILL be consequences!”

An old man was talking gruffly on the phone to someone who sounded like an underling of sorts. He was clearly not happy with whatever results were being reported to him, and he was ready to lay into his underlings in order to get the situation resolved.

“Sir, please try to understand… we’ve been working day and night trying to find a way to make this system work. But… it’s complicated. Much more so than we had first anticipated. The kids we sent into the world seemed to have aged a little as they were sent there. As a result, their game systems don’t recognize them anymore… and that makes it much harder to track them do-”

“ENOUGH!” the man roared down the phone. Alex flinched at the interruption. “I’m TIRED of your excuses! You get one more week… if you don’t have suitable results to give me by then, I will personally removing you and your team from this job! Got that?”

“Understood sir,” said Alex, his voice trembling slightly. “We’ll have results to you as soon as we can get them.

“Fine… you know the importance of this mission, right? We MUST find out where these kids are, at ALL costs!”

The old man slammed the phone down, greatly angered by the incompetence of his team. “I’m surrounded by idiots,” he murmured to himself. “Never mind. They will do what I demand of them, and they WILL find those kids… we’ve poured too many resources into this plan to fail now. That tournament was a brilliant ploy, but it’s all useless if that blasted Alex can’t get his act together..."

More questions! Like, who was the old man on the phone? What do Team Leafre want with the Void Pendant? What pokemon did I hook? Is that just another anti-climax like before, or will this one genuinely be worth noting? Oh, and what did Ryan eat at the pokemon centre? Find out... next time!

I'll see when I feel like writing the next chapter. I might take a couple of days over it to be sure I get it right, but we'll see.

RE: Mysteries of the Mind - A Trainer's Vision

O man you posted chapter 5 right when i have to leave! Ill read it soon! Im sure its great!

RE: Mysteries of the Mind - A Trainer's Vision

Welcome to the commentary corner , were RTSK comments on the recent happenings =]

Ryan... there's a good reason why I don't accept character requests, and this is one of them. I'll make this clear now - NOBODY except me is directly in the main storyline. As I said, the main characters are named after those I know irl SO wait , this isn't real life! we must be in some virtual world , AHHH WHAT IS REAL LIFE!; they have nothing to do with the main story. Don't listen to MK - I never actually said he was a direct character in the story. He's merely thinking that since the pokemon Ryan I am the ONLY RYAN! has so far have HAPPENED to coincide with his own faves. TBH, Pika was his, but Starly and Vulpix are coincidence - they're faves of mine, so... ya. I must be confused , you have 4 ryans! , wow that must be strange

MK, your "role" in this is a little more.. complicated. Yup and mine isn't even visible , TIME TO KILL YOU OFF IN MY FIC GAMERCAL! I'm sure people who are reading your fic as well will grasp this, but I'm not letting anyone know in this one. I've got my PM ready to send you - it'll be with you as soon as this post is done. Oh so he's keeping me outta the lingo , i see how it goes

Not only was it anti-climax , it made me stop reading like a de-read point, STUNKY! seriously stunkly , go listen to its sound on DP again , X_X

Interjected is a real word btw - it's similar in meaning to interrupted. Using the same words all the time is boring though - I like to use my SLIGHTLY above average vocbaulary whenever I can, just to be different.

IT Was INTER-VEALING ! not interjected =P , SLIGHTLY above average , more like : I MUST HAVE A TON OF CONFUSING WORDS IN MY FIC!

I'm glad you like the story enough to comment on it like that though - it's nice to see my work appreciated in this way. Considering that this fic may well extend over a long period of time, it's nice to know that people like it.

Yes , even though it can have its nad points , i.e stunky killer X_X , is a great read , im enjoying it , though i still don't see were my Greatblue makes a drop in

Now... on with the show!

If you too , like me got confused during that para , raise your hand now

*raises hand*

“Ack, no! Starly, wake up!” Ryan cried.

WAKE UP , WAKE UP , I NEED YOU ALBATRAUS!!!

“That won’t save it now!” the kid shouted. “Hoothoot, Peck your opponent!”

Hoothoot bounced over to Starly, and then violently thrust its beak straight into the smaller bird! The sleeping Starly couldn’t brace himself for the attack, and took heavy damage as a result. oh ... a ball bird uses tackle , this should be good

The owl lunged at the Starly, sending it flying over the ground. He appeared to be knocked out… but then his eyes opened. He was finally awake! Furious at Hoothoot for putting it to sleep, it charged, wings spread again. As it flew, it began to glow… something about this attack was different!

thats enough on this long chapter

More questions! Like, who was the old man on the phone? My fake older brother What do Team Leafre want with the Void Pendant? To use it and obtain the planet of cheese What pokemon did I hook? well how was the fishing , magikarp.... Is that just another anti-climax like before, or will this one genuinely be worth noting? PLEASE NO MORE DROPS LIKE STUNKY! Oh, and what did Ryan eat at the pokemon centre? I knew when i ate that cupcake it tasted wierd , i think it was salt? hmmmm Find out... next time! YES NEXT TIME ill be here , because these are great

I'll see when I feel like writing the next chapter. I might take a couple of days over it to be sure I get it right, but we'll see.

RE: Mysteries of the Mind - A Trainer's Vision

Lol... you're comments are awesome Ryan - keep at it!

Although that chapter wasn't as long as SOME of them on word... or at least, it didn't LOOK it. I think that might have been due to the fact that there was a lot more descriptive writing in this chapter - the others of late have been too... battle-only for my liking.

I haven't had time to write the next chapter yet (sleeping... UK times :p) but I'll see what I can do later.

EDIT: OK, here's the next chapter, hot off the press! Here's hoping people like this one too :)

Chapter 6 – The Maze Room Emerges!

“Oh my… how on EARTH did you just land THAT pokemon?! It’s far rarer that any other around here… we thought it was just a mirage! You’re a fisherman’s dream you are kid…”

The fisherman who gave Calum and Ryan their rods stood gaping at the catch that Calum had. But by simply looking at the pokemon he caught, you’d fail to see why he was so impressed.

The hooked fish was a light brown colour. It’s tail and dorsal fins were badly cut up, giving it a shabby appearance. Its large eyes showed a state of shock, which was further enforced by the desperate flopping and splashing that the fish was doing to try and get back into the water. Three dark, scar-like lines were visible on its belly.

“How did I manage to find a Feebas?” Calum exclaimed in awe. “That’s surreal… I know how hard it is to find these things. The length of time I looked on my game…”

“I don’t get it, what’s so special about this fish?” Ryan asked, thoroughly unimpressed. “I mean come on; she’s UGLY!”

Clearly offended by this, the Feebas lay on the ground briefly, and then lunged at Ryan! Ryan was hit squarely in the chest by the fish, and reeled back in shock.

“Ow…” he said. “OK, fine, I take that back! Just don’t attack me again, right?”

Laughing, Calum came to his friend’s aid. “I guess I need to catch this one pretty quick then! If there’s one thing I remember, it’s that Feebas is like Magikarp in a sense – it’s really easy to capture once you find it. I shouldn’t even have to WEAKEN it this time!” Calum threw a poke ball straight at Feebas, who couldn’t put up much of a fight, even at full strength. She quickly gave up and accepted her new home.

Ryan frowned after hearing Calum’s speech. “So, lemme get this straight. It’s not only UGLY, but WEAK as well? Why did you want that again?”

The fisherman glared at Ryan. “Just you wait boy,” he growled. “That fish may be ugly and weak NOW, but in the hands of a compassionate trainer, she’ll be the most beautiful thing on the planet before you know it… and strong too!”

Ryan wasn’t convinced. “Hmm… if you say so,” he said sarcastically, shrugging his shoulders as he did so. “Just don’t blame me if Calum decides to eat it instead!”

Calum scowled at Ryan. “Why would I do that to one of my favourite pokemon? Feebas is too cool to eat… but enough of that. We’d better get going! We have a gym to take on, remember?”

“Oh yeah! We have to make it to Birchwood City! See you later Mr. Fisherman!”

The pair crossed the river, heading back into a forest path. Unlike the other side of the river, which was covered with pine trees, this side was coated in birch. Many bug pokemon could be seen making nests in the trees above. Most notable were two groups of Beedrill, who appeared to be fighting over territory. Above them, a flock of migrating Tailow were flying, looking for easy prey.

“Hey…” Calum started. “Did you notice the change in the type of tree after we crossed the river? It’s like we crossed a border or something.”

Ryan turned his head towards Calum with a factual expression on his face. “Well, this land is covered in different types of trees, hence the name Foretta. Each river separates different types of tree, like the pine/birch we just encountered. Each river comes from a massive lake in the middle on the region – here, it is said that a legendary power sleeps.”

Calum closed his eyes, and then looked towards the sky. “I wonder if that’s where the Eevee family stay then? They are supposed to stay on an island with incredible power…”

He was interrupted. “Well, that’s not possible Calum. There isn’t actually an island there…”

Calum and Ryan had managed to reach the outskirts of Birchwood City after a short while travelling and talking about different things. The town was integrated into the forest perfectly – everything was made from natural materials from the forest, and there were several impressive trees lining the streets. The place gave Calum the impression of a secret society, one devoid of all modern conveniences. Of course, this wasn’t entirely true; the usual town services such as the pokemon centre existed. But asides from the normal buildings, the town looked very tribal.

As they approached the entrance, a young boy stopped them.

“Halt! If you wish to enter this town, you’ll have to beat me in a pokemon battle first! Seedot, go!”

The boy sent out what appeared to be an acorn with eyes and yellow feet. Its shell was a glossy dark brown; its condition was very good.

“I guess we should have expected something like this Ryan,” Calum said. “OK, I’ll entertain you. Growlithe, let’s take this guy down!”

Calum sent out his faithful puppy pokemon, who growled audibly at the walking acorn.

The boy was quick to issue a command, clearly eager to get the battle started. “Seedot, we can take that thing! Use Nature Power!”

“Like we’ll give you the chance to attack so easily… Growlithe, Ember!”

The acorn closed its eyes, gathering the power of its environment together. As it was charging, Growlithe showered it with small balls of fire! It set alight briefly, but quickly put itself out. Once it had gathered enough energy, it shot it at Growlithe, who was stunned by the force of the attack! Although it appeared that no physical damage was dealt, Growlithe wasn’t moving…

“I never did understand that move too well…” Calum said, confused as to what just happened. The boy began to explain.

“Nature Power changes what it does depending on location. Since we’re in the forest, the power of the forest is used. This translates to Stun Spore; a move Seedot doesn’t normally know! Now Seedot, Growlithe can’t fight back – use Sunny Day!”

Seedot began to glow a bright yellow. As it did so, the sunlight coming from the trees began to shine with a vicious intensity! The temperature around the battlefield rose dramatically, and Seedot began to move a lot faster.

“Chlorophyll…” Calum said as he watched Seedot’s movement speed double. “We’ll I guess we’re just going to have to make sure that we can still hit it, right Growlithe?” His puppy whined slightly from the pain of paralysis, but he quickly barked in agreement with his trainer. “All right, that’s the spirit! Show it your spirit with your most fearsome Roar!”

Struggling slightly to perform the command, Growlithe let loose a mighty bark of authority, causing the Seedot to stop dead in its tracks out of intimidation.

“Seedot, what are you doing?!” the boy cried. “You’ll let it hit you! Get moving again!”

Calum laughed. “Sorry kid, but it’s rooted to the spot from fear! Show it why it should stay like that with Ember Growlithe!”

Growlithe, with one eye closed from its pain, opened its mouth and fired his trademark fireballs at Seedot. Still frozen in fear, Seedot could do nothing to avoid the harsh attack. It appeared that Sunny Day turned against it after all! It collapsed on the floor, clearly unable to battle.

“Oh bleah, looks like I lost…” the boy said, calling back his acorn. “Oh well, guess I’ll be the first to say welcome to Birchwood City! We aim to go for a natural look in this town – we aim to be as close to the environment as we can. We tend to be cautious of outsiders as a result – we don’t want strangers ruining our beautiful harmony with nature!”

“I can see why not as well,” said Ryan, his mouth slightly open after hearing the boy’s story. “This place is beautiful! I’d seen pictures before, but nothing is as good as looking at the real thing!”

“Indeed,” the boy agreed. “Why don’t I show you to the pokemon centre? It looks like Growlithe could really use it…”

The trio walked over to the wooden pokemon centre. Only the red poke ball light on the roof of the building gave away its purpose – otherwise, it simply looked like a standard wooden shack. Thankfully, the building was equipped as all the other pokemon centres were.

“I’m assuming you’ll be challenging the gym just now then?” Nurse Joy asked as she handed Calum back his pokemon. Upon hearing his answer, she spoke cautiously. “Be careful in there. That gym is a natural maze… don’t get lost!”

“I wonder what Joy meant by a ‘natural maze’?” Ryan asked Calum as they headed towards the gym building. When they got there, a look of shock was all that could describe their reaction to the outside. The building was made up entirely of intertwining logs and leaves. This gave the building a grand and mysterious image. The inside didn’t disappoint either.

When you walked inside, the first thing you noted was that you were about 10 meters above the floor of the gym! Covering the immense base of the gym were huge hedges, outlining the shape of a Roserade. On the other side of the maze, a young female stood. She was quite tall and slender, with vivid green eyes that were brimming with self-confidence. She wore a bright green dress, accompanied by a dark brown top. This almost gave her a tree-like appearance, save for lack of green on her arms.

“Woah… so THIS is the natural maze that Joy spoke of?”

The girl spotted Calum and Ryan. “Welcome challengers! I am Lisa, keeper of the Birchwood City Gym! If you can navigate your way through my maze down there, I’ll accept your challenge of a battle. But beware; this place doesn’t have any artificial lighting, so it’ll be pretty dark at night with only the stars to provide light! Don’t get stuck for too long… My pokemon can get you out if you ask – but I won’t accept a challenger who cannot navigate the maze!”

Calum stood on the spot, absorbing this information. Suddenly, something hit him; who did she say she was again?

“Lisa… is that you? It’s been ages since I saw you! How have you been since being transported here!”

Lisa looked back in shock. “Do I know you? You look familiar… and how do you know I was transported here?”

Calum looked a little disappointed at Lisa. “You really don’t remember me do you? Maybe showing you my favourite pokemon will jog your memory. Eevee, let’s go!”

Eevee emerged from his poke ball and stood proudly next to his trainer, the pendant glinting in the light from overhead. Lisa looked puzzled for a moment, but that quickly changed to a look of fondness.

“Eevee… only one person I knew that had such a soft spot for that little guy! Calum, it’s you, isn’t it?”

Pleased to finally be recognized, Calum called Eevee back. “Yes, it’s me! I’ve been travelling around Foretta trying to find out what happened to you guys! I met Matt in the Pine City Gym – turns out he’s the poison leader there.”

Lisa looked a little disgusted. “Figures… he never WAS my favourite person. Oh well, enough of that! Are you going to take my challenge or not?”

“Do I have a choice?” Calum stuck his tongue out at Lisa, before agreeing to take the plunge.

“I’m coming too!” Ryan shouted. “No WAY I can let Calum have all the fun… this place looks too COOL for that!”

Lisa lowered the platform that Calum and Ryan had walked onto when they came in. “OK, but don’t look at me if you still can’t work it out!” She had disappeared from sight as the platform hit the ground. Calum and Ryan moved into the entrance of the maze.

“Ugh, I wish I’d paid more attention in biology now…” Ryan muttered. “Then I’d know the shape of Roserade better, and I could have done this maze easily!”

He was irked because the pair had been going round in circles for the past twenty minutes. Every way they turned seemed to lead only to three more turns… with no end in sight. Even Calum was becoming frustrated, as he was normally good at puzzles.

The two had managed to hit the far right of the maze, without any indication as to how close to the end they were. Calum thought for a while about what to do, before coming up with an idea. “What if we move towards the centre of the maze? That way, we can follow the natural route straight up! This maze even shows the COLOURS that Roserade has… see how we’re in a blue section? That shows we’re at the right arm… if we go back to the middle, we can get up and reach the head!”

Having no other possible lead, the pair took this idea on, heading back to the middle of the maze. When they got there, Calum spotted a tiny yellow pathway leading to the right.

“Hey… Roserade has small yellow bouquet-type band around its neck! So… that MUST be the way to the head of the maze! We can get out and challenge Lisa now!”

The two had reached the head of Roserade, which was devoid of most of the details. The eyes and face were clear to see, but the top of the head was merely an outline. In the middle of this, a trademark battle arena was marked out. They had reached the end of the maze!

“Finally…” Ryan muttered, wondering why he was so determined to go along with Calum in the first place. “I thought we’d be stuck in there for good! The sun is setting after all – didn’t Lisa say not to stay in the maze at night?”

“That I did Ryan,” Lisa called, looking straight at the two. “You took your time solving my maze didn’t you? Oh well, I guess that can’t be helped. NOW comes the fun part… this match will be a two against two singles game! Let’s go!”

Lisa threw her first pokemon onto the battlefield. Out of the poke ball emerged a forest green coloured dinosaur, with a large pink petal flower on its back. It looked at Calum and roared loudly, as if to stamp its authority on the game before it had begun.

“So, THAT’S how you want to start?” Calum said confidently. “Well, Ivysaur should be a good match for my Growlithe! Go!”

Once again, Calum’s faithful puppy companion entered the fray, growling at its opponent. Ivysaur was showing no signs of backing down however, shooting warning growls at Growlithe as well.

“Let the battle begin!”

So... who will win in THIS battle! Is typing too good for Ivysaur to stand a chance? Or will the power of evolution prove too great for Growlithe to handle?

Find out... in the next episode!

RE: Mysteries of the Mind - A Trainer's Vision

Rawr, thanks for the comment! I'm glad you enjoyed the story so far! I've actually got the next two chapters written since I don't plan to write one today if I can help it. Too much breeding to do :p

I'll put the next chapter up however - that'll give you a taste of what's to come.

Chapter 7 – A Leafre Showdown!

What is this power that lies in the void? The might of the legendary pokemon opened up the rift, but what did they contain within the vault? Apart from the evil soul they locked away in the chamber… there must have been something that the legends created to lure him there in the first place. But is it really possible to create a power so vast that it could destroy the world?

Of course, this can bring about another question. If there’s the power to DESTROY a world somewhere out there, is there the power to CREATE one as well? Or are they one and the same? Perhaps it is more about how one USES the power… or is it more about how the power uses you? People have often become corrupted by the lust for power… perhaps what they seek is their own destruction. Mankind has many conflicting characteristics…

“OK Calum, let’s see if you’ve stayed as sharp as I expect you have! Ivysaur, let’s begin with Leech Seed!”

“I don’t think so somehow! Growlithe, avoid the seeds with Agility, the get ready to use Flame Wheel!”

Ivy began releasing small, dark green seeds from its back, firing them towards Growlithe. Responding to Calum’s command, he artfully evaded Ivysaur’s assault. As this was going on, he was beginning to flare up, readying a charge.

“OK Growlithe, take it down!”

Lisa smiled. “You may hurt Ivysaur, but it WILL get you as well! Ivysaur, surround yourself with Poisonpowder!”

Even though it could see Growlithe on fire and racing towards it, Ivysaur stayed calm. He released a large cloud of dark purple pollen, enveloping itself and bracing for impact. It didn’t take long either; Growlithe crashed headlong into Ivysaur moments after the cloud came down! Ivysaur looked really hurt by the assault, but Growlithe came out badly as well. A lot of the pollen had stuck to its coat, and had seeped under the skin. Seconds later, the poisoning effects were all too plain to see; Growlithe howled in pain as it was damaged from the inside!

Fearing it wouldn’t last much longer, Calum asked Growlithe if it wanted to continue. With a defiant bark, it charged back towards Ivysaur, who still hadn’t fully recovered from the Flame Wheel.

“OK… if you want to continue Growlithe, I won’t stop you! Cloak your mouth with fire and Bite at Ivysaur!”

Lisa gave Ivysaur a stern look. “Come on, you can do better than this Ivysaur! Get up and Tackle that thing already!”

The ailing pokemon, both wanting to please their trainers, did as commanded. Ivysaur shook off its injuries the best it could and ran towards Growlithe. Still suffering from poison, Growlithe heated its mouth up so that flames could be seen in it, and raced towards Ivysaur. The two collided in the middle of the battlefield, with neither one backing down! Ivysaur’s Tackle had connected, but Growlithe had managed to sink its teeth into Ivysaur first! As a result, it wasn’t knocked away by the attack, hanging onto Ivysaur in a desperate attempt to take it down. The super-hot fangs of Growlithe were quickly getting to Ivysaur – it was his turn to howl in pain!

Lisa looked concerned. “Oh, Ivysaur… get that wretched flea-bag off of you already! You’re going to burn if you don’t!”

“Too late for that Lisa,” Calum said. “It already will. Growlithe, you’ve charged your fire up already – strike the finishing blow! Ember!”

Ivysaur was shaking its back vigorously in a desperate attempt to fling Growlithe off. Growlithe, having readied his attack, let go of Ivysaur, then shot it from point-blank range with the mini fireballs it was so accustomed to using now. Ivysaur was unable to withstand so much fire at such close range – it was down for the count!

“Well, that was easy,” said Calum, slightly surprised at how quickly Ivysaur succumbed to the flames. “I guess you really can’t take a plant into fire and expect to win, can you?”

Lisa was slightly angered by this comment. “Oh really? Well, let’s see you take on my signature pokemon so easily! Roserade, take centre stage!”

Lisa sent out her favourite pokemon to try and win her the battle. Her trump card was a relatively small rose pokemon. She had two bouquets on her arms – a red bunch on her right arm, and a blue bunch on the left. She had a long, dark green plant cloak behind her slender body. She wore a yellow collar around her neck, resembling the tape tied around bouquets of flowers to keep them together. She appeared to wear a mask over her face that was the same green shade as her cloak. Her mouth wasn’t covered; the lighter shade of this and her body only added to her mysterious appearance. Her hair came right down to the mask. It had the look of cotton, and the overall look the sparked interest.

“I suppose you would expect me to have this pokemon really,” said Lisa, with eyes only for her Roserade. “I met this little one as a Roselia when I got here. Two horrible men and brown and green blazers were torturing the poor thing! Apparently it wasn’t strong enough for them… anyways, I managed to free her from the men and she sent them packing with her Poison Sting. That’ll teach them! We’ve had a bond ever since… and no amount of fire is going to break THAT! Roserade, finish that ailing Growlithe off with Poison Sting!”

Roserade pointed its red bouquet at Growlithe, and then released a shower of tiny needles at it! The poisoned puppy couldn’t evade the assault. The poison from the needles compounded with what he had already suffered, causing it to very quickly faint without much opposition.

“Growlithe… I’m sorry.” Calum apologized to his pokemon as he returned it, knowing that it had served him well.

“So… that’s fire out of the way, what are you planning on using next then Calum?” Lisa inquired. Calum looked up at her and smiled.

“Something that also has fire, but of passion and competition! Go Kirlia!”

Kirlia came out of her poke ball, eyes aflame. Like her trainer, she was totally fired up for competition. Looking at her opponent, she smiled briefly. She knew she had a type advantage.

“OK Kirlia, let’s cut this rose down to size! Use Psychic!”

“I’m afraid we have other plans, boy!”

Before anyone could react, a giant ball struck the centre of the battlefield! Smoke filled the stage, causing everyone to cough and splutter. In the confusion, two screams were clearly heard – something had happened to Kirlia and Roserade! Before anyone knew what was going on, the two pokemon had been snatched up and thrown into separate cylindrical capture cells. Two men appeared, both wearing dark green suits with a brown leaf embedded into them. Lisa spotted them and screamed.

“Calum, those are the two who were torturing my Roserade!”

One of them stepped forward. “You took our Roselia away from us! We were merely training it to be tougher, and you stole it! We have a score to settle with you… but that’s not why we’re here.” The man looked at Calum. “You. You have the Void Pendant – give it to me! We WILL take your precious pokemon if you fail to comply…”

Both Roserade and Kirlia were banging desperately on the walls of their containers, unable to communicate with their trainers. After a few seconds, the man from Team Leafre spoke again.

“So… what’s it going to be? The pendant, or your precious pokemon?”

How about neither! You guys have messed with the wrong group this time!” It was Ryan who spoke. He was furious at the men for holding his friend’s pokemon for ransom, as well as disrupting an important gym battle.

The men looked round at Ryan and laughed. “What, you think you can stop us? Just try it!” the two men both sent out a pokemon at the same time. One sent out a bellflower on legs with two leaves for arms, whereas the other sent out a fairly large green turtle with a yellow shell and bushes growing out of its back.

“Bellsprout and Grotle…” Ryan said to himself, wondering what pokemon to use. “I’ll go with these two! Vulpix, Marill, go!”

The small aquatic mouse with a large ball on its tail came out of its poke ball, accompanied but a small red fox with several tails. Wondering what was going on, Ryan filled them in.

“Guys, these crooks have taken Roserade and Kirlia hostage! We have to get them back! Let’s beat these two crooks quick and free them!”

The two pokemon looked startled at the news that their friends were in danger, but this only gave them a purpose to battle. They looked at the Team Leafre enemies with a look of fury. It was clear that this fight was going to be impressive.

“Ha, like that’ll scare us, Luke and Donald! We’re Team Leafre, and we fear NOBODY! Now, Bellsprout, use Vine Whip and Marill!”

Luke’s Bellsprout produced a long, slender vine that was flung towards Marill. Ryan reacted quickly, however.

“Vulpix, use Ember on that Vine! If it’s on fire when it hits Marill, it might no do as much damage… but Bellsprout will be hurt as a result! But Marill, don’t just stand there; use Defense Curl and lessen the damage further!”

Vulpix created a ball of fire in her mouth, and then shot parts of it at the approaching vine. As this was going on, Marill curled up, bringing its tail and ears in towards its body. The vine caught fire just as it hit Marill; Marill was still hurt, but not nearly as much as it would have been! Bellsprout in the other hand retracted the vine in pain; its body had begun to smoke with the fire from the vine.

“OK Marill, let’s go on the offensive – Rollout on Grotle!”

Donald wasn’t about to sit back and take this though. “Grotle, Withdraw! Cut the damage that blasted Marill does to you as well!

Grotle hid in its shell as Marill used its body as a bowling ball to ram into the turtle! However, the damage inflicted wasn’t particularly great… Grotle’s shell was too solid for it to take any real pain, and Marill just bounced right off and crashed onto the floor!

Meanwhile, Bellsprout was finding it difficult to put the fire out that had started on its slender body. It was shaking and rolling around desperately, but all to no avail. Ryan sighed.

“Vulpix, fire an Ember at that Bellsprout and put it out of its misery will you?”

Vulpix complied; shooting Bellsprout down with the fire it created in its mouth. Luke called the flower back, unable to help his partner in the battle anymore.

“All right! This should be easy now! That Grotle hasn’t done anything to attack yet, so it should be easy!”

Donald laughed. “You think Grotle is easy prey? Ha! Show him Grotle – use Razor Leaf on Marill!”

Grotle struck Marill with several knife-like leaves fired from the bushes on its shell. Marill cried in agony as it was cut into by the super-effective attack. Seeing this, Vulpix shot an Ember attack at Grotle, who quickly retracted into its shell and reduced the damage taken to a minimum.

“Ugh… that shell is annoying,” groaned Ryan, watching Grotle become nearly immune to damage. “What we need is to stop is going INTO its shell… ah! Vulpix, use Confuse Ray and stun Grotle! Then, Marill, charge up Rollout and slam into Grotle when its confused!”

Vulpix’s eyes suddenly shone with a strange pink light. A transparent ray was fired into Grotle’s shell; invisible to the eye, but clearly felt by the turtle. Its head slowly popped out of its shell, with a dazed look in its eyes. It began to totter about on the field of battle, not being able to stand in one spot anymore.

As Grotle struggled to stay upright, Marill was rolling in progressively larger circles, building up an immense amount of attack power. As it approached its maximum velocity, it rammed right into the hapless Grotle, who was knocked into the capsules containing Kirlia and Roserade! The large weight of the turtle pokemon smashed the capsules wide open as it fainted! Team Leafre had nothing left… or so everyone thought.

“Bah, this is useless!” an enraged Donald said, taking his Grotle back. “You WON’T keep that pendant away from us forever boy! Mark my words – I WILL get it from you! This isn’t over!”

Donald threw a grey ball into the centre of the battlefield, causing another cloud of smoke to billow out and completely fill the gym! Luke and Donald make a hasty retreat in the confusion caused.

As the smoke cleared, Lisa rushed up to Calum and Ryan. “Is everyone OK?” she asked anxiously, hoping that nobody had been harmed at all. When she saw that nobody was injured, she breathed a sigh of relief. “Glad to see that… those guys don’t know when to quit! But just what were they after?”

Calum and Ryan looked at each other for a moment, and then Calum spoke. “It’s a rather long story… how about I tell you after the rest of our match? Roserade looks tough… but you can take it Kirlia! Let’s rock!”

Lisa looked at Calum and laughed. “Always the same with you… alright, I’ll finish the battle first! Roserade, take the stage! Let’s show him what we can do!”

“Luke! Donald! Report! WHY haven’t you got the pendant yet!?”

A coarse female voice called the two Leafre Goons into a dull green room. Plant life filled this room, but it didn’t brighten it at all. Quite the opposite; the sheer volume of greenery caused the room to become extremely dark and dangerous. It wasn’t a place you would want to visit if you could avoid it.

Unfortunately for Luke and Donald, they couldn’t avoid it. Their failure to obtain the Void Pendant earlier had caused the higher order to become most displeased, and so they were expecting major punishment to come their way.

Luke was the first to speak. Nervously, he started, “M-madam, please understand. That kid and his friend are extremely s-strong… we didn’t stand a ch-”

“I’m not here for excuses you idiot!” the woman screamed, slamming her fist onto her desk. In the corner of the room, a large bunch of petals shook, disturbed by the noise. Two eyes were visible briefly, but they were quickly shut again. This routine was normal; the owner of the eyes was clearly unimpressed. Unperturbed, the woman continued.

“You fools don’t seem to realise how important that pendant is… our experts are CERTAIN that a great power lies to the West, on a deserted island. But some sort of energy field surrounds the island, which makes it impossible to reach! We’ve studied the legends surrounding the island; supposedly the energy will dissipate when the Void Pendant makes contact with it. With that pendant, we could find the power to change the world! We MUST get it!”

“I-I realise that madam,” Donald said, stuttering as he did so. “The thing is this; that kid is exceptional. There’s no way we’ll get that pendant from him…”

The woman frowned. “No?” she asked. “Well then, he’ll have to lead us to the island then… but know this. We are NOT giving up on the pendant! Understood?”

“Y-Yes madam,” the duo said in unison. “Is that all for now?”

“I suppose so,” the woman said placidly, “but DON’T think you’re getting off lightly for your failure! There WILL be punishment for this!”

Team Leafre strikes again! These guys are really persistant! But they DID reveal more about the Void Pendant to the readers! Thing is, will me and Ryan realise this before things get too dangerous? And what's going to happen with the gym battle?

Find out next time! I'll put the chapter up when I've had some more views on this :D

RE: Mysteries of the Mind - A Trainer's Vision

Bah, stuff it... the last chapter didn't exactly end on a cliff hanger, so I'm not afraid to put what I have up. Chapter 8 was written yesterday, and I'll put it up now so as to satisfy anyone who wanted it :p

Chapter 8 – Masters In the Making

“Don’t hold back Kirlia; strike Roserade down with Psychic!”

Calum, looking to take command of the battle early, decided to go straight for his largest attack. Kirlia focused her mind for a second, and then unleashed a wicked wave of psychic power at Roserade! But Lisa had a plan – she knew that attack was coming.

“Roserade, use Protect!”

Roserade, seeing the forceful attack coming towards her, took a defensive stance. Holding her arms out to make a triangle with her head, she created a temporary barrier that completely shielded her from the incoming telekinetic attack from Kirlia! Calum looked surprised.

“Didn’t expect you to use that move Lisa!” he said calmly. “I guess you were never one to take such heavy hits to start with though, so I should have expected it! Kirlia, let’s take criticals out of her game; use Lucky Chant!”

Kirlia cried her incantation towards the sky, veiling herself in a blue glow. Roserade smiled, knowing that only pure power could heavily injure Kirlia now. Lisa decided that enough was enough.

“Roserade, Poison Sting! Take Kirlia down with poison!”

Roserade lifted its red bouquet and pointed it at Kirlia. It then proceeded to fire a spray of thin needles to try and bring Kirlia down.

“Don’t let it catch you Kirlia! Teleport away, then focus with Calm Mind!”

Kirlia’s teleporting speed was too quick for Roserade to get a shot in with Poison Sting. As she moved around, Kirlia quietly focused her mind on the task at hand, heightening her special abilities. Frowning at missing so often, Roserade looked at Lisa for something more constructive to attempt.

“It’s fast… we can’t hit it when it’s at that speed! Release Stun Spore Roserade! Let’s bring it down a peg or two in speed! Proceed with Poison Sting when you set the clouds up!”

Doing as commanded, Roserade unleashed 2 large and hazardous clouds of yellow, dusty pollen from either side of its body, and then went on to fire its purple needles at Kirlia. Kirlia evaded the needles, but teleported right into the pollen cloud as it did so! Being somewhat allergic to the pollen, it was quickly rendered immobile, and was struck by Poison Sting at the same time! Luckily for Kirlia, it was already paralysed, so poison was no longer an issue.

“All right, she’s not going to be able to move away now Roserade!” Lisa was excited, as she reckoned victory was hers now. “Now… strike it down with… hey, what’s going on! Roserade can’t move either! What is this?”

She was right; Roserade was down, one knee on the ground, and she was suffering from the effects of paralysis. Calum smirked as he explained.

“You of all people should know about Synchronize Lisa,” he said, in a matter-of-fact tone. “I beat you with that in the tournament… when you paralysed my Gardevoir with Togekiss and it was paralysed back… that cost you the match.”

“Oh yeah…” said Lisa, a note of bitterness creeping into her voice. “But I’m not concerned this time – Roserade’s Natural Cure should kick in soon to make it better than ever! But just incase it doesn’t… Roserade! Try and use Aromatherapy to heal yourself!”

Calum was quick to issue a counter-command however. “I don’t think so Lisa! My Kirlia doesn’t appear to be immobile entirely – use Psychic whilst it tries to heal itself!”

Calum’s observation was correct; Kirlia was able to get up and launch her most fearsome energy wave ever! Bolstered by the power of the Calm Mind used earlier, Kirlia’s psychic energy had hit her maximum power level. Roserade was too focused in trying to heal to notice the attack being launched. By the time she realised, it was already too late! She was struck with the intense energy wave, causing her to crash into the hedge at the back of the gym! Peeling herself off of the hedge, she struggled back to her feet and faced Kirlia. Her stand was short-lived, however; before she had even launched an attack she collapsed. It seems that taking such a powerful super-effective attack took so much out of it that it couldn’t continue!

“Roserade!” screamed Lisa, unable to comprehend the fact that her prized pokemon was wiped out in a single hit. “Wow… what awesome power that Kirlia has. Roserade never had a chance… well, it’s good to see that you haven’t lost your touch Calum!” Here’s the Leaf Badge for your victory.”

Lisa handed over a light brown badge in the shape of a fallen leaf. The top of the leaf was curled slightly, so that even though the badge was flat, you got the impression that it had come directly from a tree in autumn.

“I… also have this for you. It’s the TM that contains Energy Ball. I think you could make good use of it, so here!” She gave Calum a vividly green CD, which he promptly put in his bag.

“All right! You got your second badge Calum!” exclaimed Ryan, once again overjoyed that his friend was doing so well. “Now we can head off to Evergreen City and find Melissa! We can learn more about that pendant that way and try to remove the thing!”

Calum smiled, looking at the two badges now in his possession. “Yes, we can,” he replied, not fully focused on their quest at the time. He was more focused on his own quest… to find his friend Gregor! “Lisa, do you know anything about where Gregor is?”

She gave Calum a puzzled look. “Gregor?” she asked. “OH, you mean the person you met in the finals? I haven’t seen him personally, but I’ve been told that there’s a wonder kid going around the region right now, tearing apart every trainer he’s come across… I’m assuming that’d be him, yes?”

Calum laughed a little. “Most likely,” he replied jokingly. “The only person he could never beat was me… hopefully he can give me a good challenge when I find him!”

After giving each other the Poketch numbers they had, Calum and Ryan left the gym and headed north, aiming to reach Evergreen City and find out more about the Void Pendant.

“Mr. Alex sir, come quickly! We’ve established the location of five of the participants in the tournament! It appears they are at separate towns of the world.”

Alex went rushing over to the computer monitor that his technician was poring over, excited to see some results at last.

“Excellent!” he exclaimed, noting down which people they could track now. Two names that stood out caught his eye however. “Say… haven’t you managed to find Gregor and Calum yet? Those two should be on here… what is taking so long to find them?”

The technician put her hands together, a little nervous about answering the question. “Well… we think it is because they’re never in one place for too long. We’re still trying to map this region out, to determine where the major towns and cities lie. It is a little hard to track someone if you don’t know where they will be heading after all…”

Alex looked a shade disappointed. “I see… well, when you find them, let me know immediately! We have to be fast out this, or the old codger will have us for breakfast! I barely managed to survive his last assault…” Alex shuddered at the thought of having to go through that again. “Needless to say though, this may buy us some time. I’ll report the news at once!”

“Oh man, we’re actually going to Evergreen City! How awesome is THAT!”

As usual, Ryan was chattering at 100 miles an hour, with barely any of it making any sense. From recent battles to missing home, from the pendant to Team Leafre, nothing escaped a conversation with him in this mood.

“Wait, what exactly is so special about Evergreen?” asked Calum, whose interest had perked up slightly.

“Well… where do I begin? There’s a HUGE marketplace there, there’s Pokemon Contest Halls, there’s the airport to take you to the other side of the region, there’s a SPECTACULAR gym… oh, not to mention the lustrous Game Corner, and a special park for walking pokemon, and…”

“OK, OK… forget I asked,” said an irritated Calum, unable to see why Ryan couldn’t focus on just one thing for a change. “What kind of items are available at the market that you can’t get elsewhere?”

With a glint in his eye, Ryan quickly replied. “I’m glad you asked that. According to what dad told me, the Evergreen market is known for its wide variety of TMs, along with evolutionary stones! We could get some to see what pokemon we could use them on to get stronger!”

“Actually, that’s not a bad idea for once,” Calum said, surprised that Ryan came out with something useful for a change. “I could get a Thunder Stone for my Eevee… and we could have Fire Stones for Growlithe and Vulpix! That could help us kick Team Leafre’s tails, don’t you think?”

“Absolutely!” answered Ryan, jubilant at the thought of beating Donald and Luke again. “Say… do you think we should have another battle soon? I want to see how much I’ve improved, and if I can stand up to your attacks yet… what do you think?”

“Sure,” Calum started, but a pair of bikers blocking the path cut him off. The pair were guarding a bridge, with toll signs up.

“Give us your pokemon kid, or you aren’t getting past!”

The two were clearly not budging. Seeing as this was the only way across the water, Calum sighed. “I guess we’re going to have to show you that stealing is wrong… Eevee, come teach these goons a lesson!”

Ryan was quick to join in. “Staravia, assist Eevee! Let’s go!”

The two pokemon came out onto the field before their trainers, scowling at the bikers in front of them. The bikers looked pleased, however.

“Offering your pokemon to us then? Did you see that Lewis?” One of them clearly took this as a gesture that they were the offered pokemon. His partner wasn’t so naïve though.

“Stupid Paul! They’re BATTLING us with those pokemon, not GIVING us them! Trapinch, let’s kick some tail!”

Paul looked at his partner in confusion, still thinking that Eevee and Staravia were offerings. He then realised the error in this, quickly sending out his Mankey to accompany Trapinch.

“We can take these two Eevee! Use Quick Attack and go after Trapinch!”

Ryan was quick to issue an order as well. “Staravia, use your Quick Attack as well! Hit Mankey!”

The two pokemon raced towards their respective targets with all the velocity they could muster. Neither opponent was particularly quick to react, so both were knocked over by the attacks. It was then that Paul and Lewis got into the fray a little.

“Mankey! Don’t just LIE there! Use Thrash!”

“Trapinch, what are you doing! Dig into the ground!”

The little ant lion burrowed underground at an impressive pace, leaving only a gaping hole in the ground where it went under. Mankey got back up on its feet as this was happening, with a look of solid rage in its eyes. It raced over to Calum and Ryan’s pokemon and went on a rampage of assaults that sent Eevee flying towards Staravia, who barely evaded the airborne dog. Crashing into the ground, but quickly getting up, Eevee glared at Mankey in disgust. It was Ryan who made the move to take it on though.

“Staravia, use Whirlwind! Blow that Mankey clean away!”

Staravia landed and flapped its wings as hard as it could. The tremendous gust of wind that resulted was enough to send Mankey flying back towards Paul! It collided with the bridge’s fixture that was protruding out of the ground. Already confused after its rampage, this was enough to render it useless for the fight. Growling at the pair, Paul called it back. “It’s all up to you now Lewis…”

Lewis looked confident, however. “Don’t worry about it; that bird is grounded. Trapinch, come on out and wipe Staravia out!”

The ground below the battlefield shook violently. Staravia and Eevee were both trying to stay balanced, unable to move without falling over. But where was Trapinch in all of this? The shaking of the ground became more severe; Trapinch was coming to the surface! But where was it going to resurface?

Well... looks like there's another uncertain outcome... what do you think? Where is that blasted Trapinch?

Find out... next time! ;)
