Hey Guys,

I'm new to the competetive Pokémon TCG scene and I want to play a Yveltal/Zoroark Deck for the next rotation. But since I am pretty inexperienced there are probably some obvious card/tech choices that I overlooked.
So I figured I'd ask for some advice here.

Here is my current decklist for the upcoming rotation. Any help is appreciated.

Pokémon - 14

  • 2 Shaymin-EX
  • 1 Yveltal BKT 94
  • 3 Yveltal XY 78
  • 3 Yveltal-EX
  • 1 Zoroark BREAK BKT 92
  • 2 Zorua BKT 89
  • 2 Zoroark BKT 91

Trainer Cards - 34

  • 4 Trainers' Mail
  • 2 Lysandre
  • 4 Ultra Ball
  • 1 Ninja Boy
  • 4 Max Elixir
  • 3 Fighting Fury Belt
  • 1 Reverse Valley
  • 2 Parallel City
  • 2 N
  • 1 Pokémon Ranger
  • 2 Float Stone
  • 4 Professor Sycamore
  • 4 VS Seeker

Energy - 12

  • 4 Double Colorless Energy
  • 8 Darkness Energy Energy

I currently run 2 Darkrai EX which provide another and different attack option. I would recommend replacing a Trainer's Mail and an Yveltal (XY) for the suggested Darkrai EXs. Otherwise, you have a very nice list, IMO.

Thanks for the input. Do you think that 8 Darkness Energy are enough for Darkrai?

Not a bad list at all. For my tastes, I just don't like running max elixir with less than 10 basic energy.

I would perhaps drop a Yveltal EX, Parallel City, and Zoroark Break. And add 2 more Dark energies and a Darkrai EX.

Hi Arizaiaz,

Nice deck choice. Not sure that the deck needs Pokémon Ranger after September. Consider to remove it for another Ninja Boy since it allows the deck to be used as a toolbox. To fit in Darkrai Ex I would remove Zoroark BREAK and one Yveltal Ex. Also consider to trade one or two Double Colorless for an equal number of Basic Darkness Energy to make Max Elixir more viable. Personally I would also loose Parallel City to two more Reverse Valley since Zoroark already acts as your M Rayquaza counter in this toolbox. I also like Giovanni's Scheme in this deck to either draw or hit for additional damage.

Pokémon (14):
  • 2 Yveltal BKT (beatdown)
  • 2 Yveltal XY (beatdown)
  • 2 Darkrai Ex (beatdown)
  • 2 Yveltal Ex (beatdown)
  • 2 Zorua BKT 89 (evolve)
  • 2 Zoroark (beatdown)
  • 2 Shaymin Ex (draw)
Trainer (34):
  • 4 Professor Sycamore (draw)
  • 1 Giovanni's Scheme (draw)
  • 2 Ninja Boy (versatile)
  • 1 Lysandre (control)
  • 2 N (draw)
  • 3 Fighting Fury Belt (beatdown)
  • 4 Max Elixir (accelerate)
  • 3 Trainer's Mail (search)
  • 1 Super Rod (retrieval)
  • 2 Float Stone (retreat)
  • 4 Vs Seeker (retrieval)
  • 4 Ultra Ball (search)
  • 3 Reverse Valley (beatdown)
Energy (12):
  • 2 Double Colorless Energy
  • 10 Darkness Energy

The even split on Yveltal is a personal preference since Yveltal BKT disables tools which is great in the new format that has no tool removal trainers. Hope this provides some initial assistance.

Thanks Guys,

here's my updated list:

Pokémon - 15

  • 2 Shaymin-EX
  • 2 Darkrai-EX
  • 1 Yveltal BKT 94
  • 3 Yveltal XY 78
  • 2 Yveltal-EX
  • 1 Zoroark BREAK
  • 2 Zorua BKT 89
  • 2 Zoroark BKT 91

Trainer Cards - 33

  • 3 Trainers' Mail
  • 2 Lysandre
  • 1 Super Rod
  • 4 Ultra Ball
  • 1 Ninja Boy
  • 4 Max Elixir
  • 3 Fighting Fury Belt
  • 3 Reverse Valley
  • 2 N
  • 2 Float Stone
  • 4 Professor Sycamore
  • 4 VS Seeker

Energy - 12

  • 10 Darkness Energy Energy
  • 2 Double Colorless Energy
- Not sure how I feel about only playing 2 DCE, but I'll find out during testing.
- Pokémon Ranger did indeed seem kinda useless in this deck, so I cut it.
- Same goes for Parallel City. The only relevant matchup I could think of is M-Ray, but Zoroark counters that already.
- Don't know if I need a second Ninja Boy and what I should cut for it.

Please correct me, if you think I'm wrong.

By comparison, I run 9, but my Trainer mix is different. Given your mix of Items, you have a good chance to play them early game (T1 - T2 hopefully) to get your deck to a point where your chances of hitting the Max Elixir occurs 75%+ (my metric) of the time. So, test, test, test to ensure you hitting a number (3+ 75%+ of the time?) of Max Elixir with the 8 Dark energy.

Hi Diz93,

The revised deck looks nice. Would remove one Lysandre for a second Ninja Boy but that is a personal preference.

  • Pokemon:10
  • 2 Darkrai-EX
  • 1 Yveltal-EX
  • 2 Shaymin-EX
  • 1 Yveltal BKT
  • 2 Yveltal XY
  • 1 Aegislash-EX
  • 1 Yveltal Break
Trainers:38
  • 4 Sycamore
  • 3 N
  • 1 Lysandre
  • 1 AZ
  • 1 Ninja Boy
  • 1 Pokemon Ranger
  • 1 Hex Maniac
  • 2 Reverse Valley
  • 2 Fighting Fury Belt
  • 2 Float Stone
  • 4 Ultra Ball
  • 4 Trainers' Mail
  • 4 VS Seeker
  • 4 Max Elixir
  • 1 Enhanced Hammer
  • 1 Battle Compressor
  • 1 Super Rod
  • 1 Escape Rope
Energy:12
  • 12 Dark
That's my take on the Dark Toolbox deck. Of course there is some optional things in there. The Aegislash-EX for example. I mainly use it for a counter to some decks, particularly fairy. Even though it only hits for 40, if I do use it at all, 40 damage to the opponent is better than me doing 120, and they hit me for 110(Just an example). Plus, it's great at holding energy down while attacking with Darkrai. Just my thoughts on the deck. I based this list off of Water Toolbox, since that did half my testing for me, since consistency plays a big role in playtesting. I don't know if I'd change the trainer lineup at all if I were you, but you could certainly do something with the Pokemon and energy. You could play Zoroark in this list, but you would have to drop some stuff, and same with Garbodor. All in all, it's a toolbox, so do what you want with it, and if it doesn't work, fix it up. But anyway, that's the list. Good luck!

Hi gumball51321,

Nice list. Personally I would take out Battle Compressor and Enhanced Hammer for one more Yveltal BKT and one more Yveltal BREAK. Did you look into Malamar Ex in this list? He is awesome with Darkrai Ex and Yveltal BKT. You can attach to Malamar Ex to send the defender to sleep and Ninja Boy into either of the two attackers mentioned. People run a limited arsenal of switch cards and status effects are a perfect means to slow them down. Malamar Ex also enables the deck to take out Pokémon Ranger since an asleep defender cannot use an attack that would limit your options. I assume that you know my variant of Yveltal BREAK. Still looking for a good replacement for Malamar Ex in my Yveltal BREAK deck when Malamar Ex is rotated out. Would be great to have three different competitive Darkness variant available :).
