I thought Pokebeach might be a good place to ask this, since I know many of you are avid TCG collectors (I dabble a little in that, but lack of money prevents me from doing more than buying a couple of booster packs every once in a while).
Anyway, I'm curious as to what you all think of more broad/extreme collecting. For example, that guy with every single G. I. Joe action figure in-box, or someone with ten copies of a certain rare game, etc.
Do you think there's a line where this hobby becomes an unhealthy obsession?
What about the higher value of stuff that's still in-box or shrinkwrapped; do you think that has merit? Or do you believe things were meant to be opened and used?
I personally think huge collections are amazing to look at and they must tell lots of stories (where the collector got each one and etc.), but damn if they don't look like I'd have to sell my soul to afford them.
As for unopened things... Eh. I don't personally see much more value in it; though I can see why it would be neat to have a rare item that's completely untarnished. Where I draw the line is with rare games, especially when the collector has a number of them. I believe that games are meant to be played and enjoyed as games, and keeping them as chunks of plastic and metal defeats their purpose. But things like action figures, models, cards, etc... those things don't really NEED to be opened to enjoy.
