How do you feel about general collecting?

I thought Pokebeach might be a good place to ask this, since I know many of you are avid TCG collectors (I dabble a little in that, but lack of money prevents me from doing more than buying a couple of booster packs every once in a while).
Anyway, I'm curious as to what you all think of more broad/extreme collecting. For example, that guy with every single G. I. Joe action figure in-box, or someone with ten copies of a certain rare game, etc.
Do you think there's a line where this hobby becomes an unhealthy obsession?
What about the higher value of stuff that's still in-box or shrinkwrapped; do you think that has merit? Or do you believe things were meant to be opened and used?

I personally think huge collections are amazing to look at and they must tell lots of stories (where the collector got each one and etc.), but damn if they don't look like I'd have to sell my soul to afford them.
As for unopened things... Eh. I don't personally see much more value in it; though I can see why it would be neat to have a rare item that's completely untarnished. Where I draw the line is with rare games, especially when the collector has a number of them. I believe that games are meant to be played and enjoyed as games, and keeping them as chunks of plastic and metal defeats their purpose. But things like action figures, models, cards, etc... those things don't really NEED to be opened to enjoy.

I fear that my collection is taking me into unhealthy territory. However, its not costing me too much money so Idk what to make of it. Either way, I admire massive and thorough collections of many types, but I could never bring myself to some of the levels that people reach. If its affecting their job or relationships, then its probably a bad thing. In most cases, though, I think people are able to handle balancing a crazy huge collection with their every day life.

Also, some people have the money to spend on rare items that would cost an arm and a leg for others.

I seem to get close to the extreme with my collecting, but then back off from it right before I go off the deep end. I did this with my record album collection, Ninja Turtles collection, comic books, and even Pokemon. What I mean by this is, for example, I kept buying records even if the artist wasn't a personal favorite of mine. I'd be like, "Oh, Fleetwood Mac. I'll get this. Oo, Boston, REO, ..." Eventually I'd have this over abundance of collectibles, some I cared for very little, and I had hardly any space to store new items.

So, I just started weeding out my collections and backing off on buying stuff. I've sold a bunch of records so that my current collection fits nicely on two shelves and I've sold a bunch of MIB TMNT figures. I don't think I could ever get rid of the TMNT figures that I actually played with though. They're still packed in a big tote. I wish I had a big enough space to put them on display, but I do not.

I think collecting things is healthy as long as the collector doesn't become a hoarder and realizes when he has too much and needs to get rid of/sell some things if he's still going to collect. I think having one room devoted to a collection is fine, but if the entire house becomes this shrine to your vast collection of things, I think that's crossing the line.

As a collector myself, I am perfectly ok with collectors. I dont understand one thing though.

Sealed collections.

I know its nice to show off and all, but there is absolutely no point in collecting sealed boxes. I seen some people on youtube go crazy with sealed things.

Aside from Pokemon stuff, I collect Anime, Manga, video games, figures of video game or Anime characters and rocks. Not like the kinds you would find outside on the road, or in your yard, etc. I mean the ones like minerals and gems. (for example, Quartz, Onyx, Jade, etc.)

I think I am somewhat addicted, I just collect things for no reason I am scared.

I collect

Comic Books ( I love superheroes but never have time to read them )
DVD's
Blue Rays
Special Edition DVD's
Steel books
Pokémon Plushes
Pokémon Toys
Nintendo Magazines
Pokémon Magazines
Pokémon Cards
Posters
I keep every empty pack of cards I open
I keep every box of cards I open
I keep ever deck of cards I open
I keep every tin of cards I open

I have like 25 empty Pokémon Tins
10 Yu-gi-oh Tins
10 Pokémon decks
Over 500 empty packs of Pokémon
over 200 yu-gi-oh packs

I think it depends on what you're collecting. For example, I collect shot glasses whenever I travel. I have collected shot glasses from many places in the U.S. and in just a couple of other countries but at the same time I think my collection is pointless. I'm probably going to get bashed for saying this, but a conclusion that I've basically come to is that if your collection can't be used, if it just sits there, then it seems pretty stupid, pointless and materialistic.
At first I just thought that it would be totally awesome to showcase all of the different places I've visted on my shelf (via the shot glasses). But tbh, I never even look at them or show them off or anything, they just sit there. I don't actually take shots with them either, so they have no actual use to me, and yet I still collect them. So it's really just a waste of money....but who knows maybe I will appreciate them more when I get a lot older.

On the other hand, I've collected Pokémon anime for many years, lol. The difference with this is that I love the anime and I watch it regularly. So the collection is used and reused, it serves a purpose and it actually has sentimental meaning. It stands for a nice chunk of my childhood and the older VHS tapes remind me of old times when I used to enjoy them with my brothers and my friends when I was just a little kid. Needless to say, I still love it and I will for a long time. So this collection actually has value and use.

To each his own though, right? Some people like to hoard things even if there is no meaning or use to it. I think collecting unopened things for the purpose of accumulating value on it is good, but if you keep it just to have it then that's kind of ridiculous. But for me, If it doesn't have a use or if it doesn't represent something, it's kind of a waste.

Well my DVD & Blue Ray collection has a use I watch them regularly. I will say Nostalgia, is a massive part in collecting.
